How fast can you pick....

Postby Ryzom » 9 Mar 2004 23:13

Alright, I got this abus diskus level 9 lock the one with spooled pins, and I can get it but it normally takes a while and it tends to chew up my hook pick, I reverse pick it but that still doesn't seem to speed things up. Am I missing something here?

Nope, spool pins can often take quite a while.

You're not missing something on the speed. I'm pretty impressed that you can pick them, actually. But if it's "chewing up" your hook pick, that might be a sign of a problem. I can't imagine why it'd be doing that.

well i can tell you why :P, i tend after a certain period of picking to get, not a sticky pin, but a stuck pin. And normally if i apply enough force to push that up the lock unlocks, however the force required to push it up is far far too much for my poor hook to take. I imagine it becomes stick cause its stuck between the plug and the chassi

p.s. releasing tension normally knocks all the pins down and I have to start over so i tend to try and avoid that whenever possible

Ryzom,

If it's that stuck, it sounds like you're using too much tension. Obviously you don't want to release it completely, then you'd have to start over, but you might want to try using just a little bit less.

Just a thought,

Too much force

Postby Blitzkrieg » 10 Mar 2004 23:03

If you have to use that much force on your tension wrench to keep the set pins set, then maybe your setting the pins in the wrong direction. If your setting from back to front then try from front to back.

Also you may want to trick picking in the "wrong " direction then using a plug spinner. A squirt of a lubricant coulnt hurt either. Just a thought.

I don't think I am using too much tension, because I actually can release the tension entirely and still be unable to move the pin, thats what has me stumped, It shouldn't act that way.

And what would opening it the "wrong" way do? I am not sure it would turn that way because It won't even with a key, and the times I have picked things the wrong way (specifically doors) it has just caused a lot of trouble.

And lubricant being what exactly? I know WD40 will just gum up the lock, and I can't get my hands on any camping gas to clean em out.

White gas? nah, dont bother.

Go to a hardware store and find where they sell WD-40 products. There will be a can that says "3 in 1 professional" or something of a Spray silicone lubricant. Ive used that with good results. Tri-Flo is also recommended.
