Lemme get this straight...
5 pin deadbolts have the same basic lockpicking mechanics as a 5 pin padlock right?
I'm just confused...
I've seen in a few posts that people should start with kwikset deadbolts. I looked up kwikset and they have like a million models! Any in particular that are nice to learn with? It's confusing to me. There are a lot of different types of deadbolts too. I was looking at double cylinder ones. Do i Just unlock it and try to take them apart or do I hold both locks at the same time to pick them?

Yes. Picking-wise it is not even possible to say what is harder, there are some really easy deadbolts and some really tricky padlocks. If the padlock has a small keyway it canbe tricky.
There are two small differences though - you can generally pick a deadbolt in both directions, because the plug can rotate in both directions. This is sometimes important, because with a different rotation direction the binding order can change and it might therefore be easier to pick this way and not the other. Padlocks on the other hand usually only turn in one direction and therefore can only be picked into this direction.
The other thing is the spring force. In deadbolts there is no resistance to turning (except for the pins obviously). That means you have to use only very small amounts of pressure on the tension wrench to bind the pins. In padlocks there is a spring that rotates the plug back to the zero degrees position, therefore you must use a bit more pressure to overcome spring pressure and get the binding.
It is hard to say which is easier. I found padlocks easier at first, but maybe my padlocks were just very forgiving. Your mileage may vary. I'd start training on both at the same time...

Kwickset locks - do they even exist? I have been everywhere looking for locks and have never seen a Kwickset - really. They must exist because I see posts about them all the time, start off with kwickset. Anyway, is that the manufacturers name, or is it just a generic name for the el-cheapo locks that are sometimes sold at the "Stop N Go" --> "One Stop" type of variety stores? I'm probably beyond the scope of Kwickset locks right now, but I would like to aquire one.
Did I spell Kwickset incorrectly?

Kwikset is the name of the lock itself. It was bought by Black&Decker so you may see mthem under that label. They are typically sold in one of three lines. Security, Maximum Security, and Ultra Maximum Security. Ill give you three guesses as to which would be best for begginers. Lol. Good luck, and if you don't find one do what Shrub said and just get the cheapest you can find.

Heh, those Ultra Maximum Security ones can actually be pretty fun sometimes. It's the only deadbolt you can buy at Lowes or Home Depot that is ANSI Grade 1.

Yeah you'll see it down the bottom right of their webpage. It's www.kwikset.com (notice no C in kwikset)
They used to have kwikset and kwikset titan. When Black & Decker bought them they came up with the marketing friendly names.
Lol.

I am always amazed how many companies that appear to be independent to the general public are actually part of large corporations. This is scary. There is the theory that one half a dozen corporations will own anything. I think this has already happened...

Yeah it's amazing how many competing high security locks are owned by the same parent company, like Mul-T-Lock and Assa.
