Foley-Belsaw Impressioning exercise

Postby lightfoot » 12 Jul 2006 17:37

Hi Guys,
I'm on the section of the Foley-belsaw course where u learn to make a key by smoking the blank and although I was able to make one that worked I am having a very difficult time seeing where the wards in the lock are supposed to rub off the carbon. I have a key cut to fit and I could always smoke it and place it and the blank in my vise and file from there but, I think the point of the exercise is to be able to cut a key using the lock only. Am I doing somthing wrong? I'm inserting the blank fully and turning left and right a couple times and using a lot of force each time and trying not to touch the sides when removing the blank but it still does'nt make a very clear impression as to where I should file. any help would be great. Thanks

Try a felt marker...it works well too. Hey, you think that's hard, wait 'til you get to impressioning a key for a pin tumbler!

I have two blanks left out of four they sent, 1st one I did great on one side then I got cocky and filed the other side off abt - much. second one I lined up the ward cuts perfect but cut too deep on one -it works but looks like sh*t. I'll try the felt marker and let u know how it goes. Thanks
