Need Help rekeying a key in knob

Postby Wolf2486 » 18 Aug 2006 17:34

I have a kwikset key in knob lock that needs rekeying however I do not have any specialized tool to pop the cylinder out of the knob. I was wondering if there was another way to get this thing out or do I have to purchase the specialized tool?

Maybe this will help....
Kwikset Rekeying Manual

It seems to depend on the knob as to wherther or not you need a special tool.

Unfortunately for me, the article still says that I need the cylinder removal tool to pop out the cylinder.

Could you possibly use some form of tool as a substitute for the removal tool?

Thats what I though you could do, seeing as it shows you how to remove the lock, by alinging the tabs and soforth.

The cylinder removal tool doesn't look like anything special to me but maybe its just the pictures.....

Sure you can use a substitute tool. Use a 3/16" Allen Wrench with the long end entered into the hole and, with a small hammer, malot or bang it on the table/workbench hit the other end.

Sometimes they can be stubborn but, as you hit it you can check the cylinder housing and it will slowely star to pop out from the knob. Basically it is being used the same way the cylinder removing tool or screw driver just not as pointed.

if you still can't get it, then there's still other stuff to try.

I was doing the EXACT same thing. I finally got it just last night at around 1 am. not kidding. so that's today, actually. I snipped about a six inch line of coat hanger and used a small screw driver. I'm assuming you've taken out the metal rod in the hole by now. another thing that helped me was to stick something....do you know the spring part you had to push down to get the metal rod loose? I stuck an big allen wrench in there to hold the spring in so it would move the plate covering part of the hole. Then I followed the tip of that metal plate straight down with the coat hanger piece, there's a small wedge shape directly below the tip of the metal piece. jam the coat hanger in there. Then on the direct opposite side, you see the long protruding metal piece that the rod was up against? look down there, and if you follow the metal piece directly down, you'll see another wedge-shaped spot. stick the screw driver in there. if you still can't get it, PM me and I'd be glad to post some pictures or a youtube video showing you exactly what to do.

good luck :)
