Created a bump key with a file - feedback on quality

Bump keys and lock bumping finally have their own area. Discuss making bump keys, proper bumping techniques, and countermeasures here.

Thanks for all the replies, i gathered i had attacked the shoulder far too much :(
Hopefully when i can analyse a real working bump key the error of my ways will be noted!

Shrub wrote:Zerokool, what you have done is to not read the key quite right, youve missed no cuts or very shallow cuts and only filed the ones you had that were deep,

You will have to restart im afraid,

No problem restarting having a copy of a key where i work is like a buck and some change.

There is a line in keys.... how close do you get to that line and do i just use a chainsaw sharpener . And dont file down the shoulder ?

That line is called the key warding, it coresponds to the warding on the plug,

You dont go off the warding when cutting the key you go off the maximum lenght of pin for that series of locks,

For a kwikset you will find the measurement and file to that depth and then an extra stroke or two with the file,

You do remove a little off the shoulder and the tip to make it work,

I will do 2 things for you as im in a good mood,

I will find out the depth for you to file to and i will look for a pdf made by Zeke on how to make bumpkeys,

I too have created a bump key with a file and am wondering what I am doing wrong - I cannot seem to bump any Schlage lock. I used an old SC1 key originally cut to 54438. Here is a picture:

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm just looking into bumping as a starting point for an interest in locks. Thanks in advance.

Your spacing and the width of each space is out....quite alot I think...

Keep trying!

Perhaps...take a Schlage barrell....

Put key head in vice....put plug on key...measure spacings...cut depths to 91/2....make sure peaks are correct...file tip of key back....and go for it!

Yoiur cuts need to be a V sahpe and i suggest youve cut too low or at least cut too much material off where there isnt a cut,

Hm, so that key's probably worthless now. I'll have to try again, I guess. Didn't know that the cuts had to be V-shaped.

Thanks for the advice!

You will need greater peeks between pins. The idea is that the pins will rise sharply when you strike the bump key. I created a schlage bump key by first gettinga 999 key and making the pin depths a hair deeper. Then I cut the shoulder back about .5 mm.

You need to also remove a little from the tip,

Anyway, the one on the left is handmade, the right is purchased that way.
