Taking off bottom shoulder to bump?

Hey I was just wondering if taking off the bottom shoulder of a kwikset key would effect the bumping ability of the key? I've bumped sucessfully, but i've noticed that the bottom shoulder will also leave mark on the lock. I can't see why cutting the bottom shoulder would make a difference. I live with my parents and I've been beating up their locks... lol..... thanks in advance for your time

Don't worry, I won't tell you not to pick or mess with a lock that matters. Because I am sure you realize the risks of damage.


And no, I don't believe that it will hamper the bumping ability.

It's funny mrdan cause my dad was just as curious about bumping as I was....he was egging me on lol

Im not sure that the bottom bit is a shoulder, put a normal key in a lock and look to see if that even touchs, usually its back a bit from the top shoulder which is the index that puts the cuts under the pins. I was cutting the lower edge off a primus and leaving this bit to index, but in fact, it does not index, putting it in til this stops it is past the true register.

I guess what he means is, if it's not an essential part of the key, yes, you can file it down to relieve a bit of the dent that forms from bumping the key, um, right?

If you look at some of the european lockpicking sites, you will find that the way that they use bumpkeys often incorporates a piece of rubber or hot glue or something interfaceing with the plug, what you might try is a combination of a metal washer and a rubber faucet seal with the bump key put through the washer, but stopped by the washer and the rubber in front of that, so that when you bump, the key hits the washer and the rubber shields the plug then you could file fit the bump keys so that they would have room to pass through this, the bumper could be interchanged onto different bumpkeys, Im getting so tire of typeing bumpkey, I suggest we make a shortend name, boinkers comes to mind. I guess thats not shorter though.

Thanks for all the input..... and yea i am a noob....everyone is at one point and I think you guys should realize that bump keys are fun for us noobs because we get results with minimal skill...which is fun, and that's why we are here...to have fun with the hobby ....it keeps us motivated to learn and explore more rather than trying to do something very frustrating and giving up.......that is no fun...
