On the WD-40 thing, WD is Wet to Dry and 40 is the weight of the oil ie thin, it was designed to remove moisture from old fashioned points and distrubitors on cars,

I always heard WD is for "Water Displacement," and 40 represented the 40th attempt at a formula by the inventor. Wikipedia seems to back me on this, but it’s not exactly a reliable source, so I have no idea.

OK, this is straight from the WD-40 website (http://www.wd40.com/Brands/wd40_faqs.html)

What does WD-40 stand for?
WD-40 literally stands for Water Displacement, 40th attempt. That's the name straight out of the lab book used by the chemist who developed WD-40 back in 1953. The chemist, Norm Larsen, was attempting to concoct a formula to prevent corrosion—a task which is done by displacing water. Norm's persistence paid off when he perfected the formula on his 40th try. Please see Our History for more information.

More history here, apparently it was designed for the aerospace industry to protect the outer shell of missiles: http://www.wd40.com/AboutUs/our_history.html

I was never actually sure that what I heard was true, sounds like a myth, but that's what it is.

Lock Cleaning

Postby TODDTEK » 30 Aug 2006 21:07

Just a little tip i use to clean out locks and anything else that needs flushing/purging.
I use Lighter Gas (Butane) push nozzle into keyway and bingo.
A couple of pushes and out come the muck use a rag over the keyway as you apply to catch debris.
Please be careful when trying this as it is very flammable :) no naked flames .

Ronson Multilube. Penetrates like WD-40, lubricates like PTFE and just plain works. Absolutely wonderful stuff.

I couldn't even begin to tell you whats in it as the can doesn't say anything, and neither does their web site. Go figure, but I have been using this stuff for a long time, and never had any problems with it at all.

Far superiour to WD-40 in my opinion, leaves a protective, lubricating film, and much cleaner than graphite (which I also use from time to time).
