Using girls hair things to pick locks

anyhoo can I use those things that girls stick in there hair? bobi pins or whatever...?

i always just move her to the lock. i hate when they start complaining about you pulling on there hair. they need to move closer to the lock.

yeh, the first picks i used were made from hacksaw blades (read off some crappy site, the guy had no idea, (or maybe it was just me that had no idea...) and i made the pick WAY to big, it wouldn't even fit in the lock! it was a snake, and it was so stuffed, i gave up on lockpicking. I then found this site, and made some bobby pin picks with a bent screwdriver as a tension wrench, and picked a rep. cylinder with 3 pins while i waited for my bought picks to come in the mail. My skill improved straight away after buying (never had picked a lock until i found this site! Thanks 101!) Once i had my bought picks, i could make picks that were similar size etc. to my bought ones, and now sometimes go for them before the good ol' SouthOrds. Buy a small set, get the idea, then make your own.

(I would reccomend you buy a replacement cylinder or cheap deadock, and take all pins out bar 1 stack and progress to 2 pin stacks, 3 pin stacks etc. Its the best way to learn.)

my first lock was picked with a boby pin and a screwdriver... then I picked it using the wire from my wife's bra as a tension wrench...

using the bobby pin, I used the bumpy side as a rake, and the other side I curled up to form a crude hook..

I found them alright to use, but painful on the fingers...

ditto. I solved this by using good ol' insulation tape and heat shrink. Great feedback, and sooooooo much more comfortable, but it sliped off sometimes.

OK, after reading this thread, i had to give it a try. i made these in a few minutes. they are actually quite funtional, i didn't invest any time in sanding them, but was able to open my front door and a few master 4 pin padlocks. i found out that there were many types of bobby/hairpins. these were made from a thicker/wider hair curler pin(?) with no ripples. had to heat them to avoid cracking when bending for the wrench, but they kept their strength. so i guess that they do make decent disposeable picks in a jam.

think these would break off in a lock? wouldn't want that to happen...

also I'll try this maybe next week..I already have my tension wrench which is made out of a bicycle spoke!

Timmy321, those picks would bend before they broke, that type of steel tends to crack when folded more than 90 degrees, far more than what your would encounter when picking. Take my advice and use a wiper blade insert instead, vastly more superior. as for the shape, its just a few seconds freehand on a cheap grinder, although i did heat the tip and bent it up a bit before i made the deforest style end. Its really just a little bit of material removed in the shape of a cresent. after you make a few hundred hooks or so, its second nature. remember, there is no perfect shape, i've never used a template in my life. the more variety the better.
