I wonder if ripping a stuck spring out of a cylinder can cause any damage to the plug or the shell that would be uncharacteristic of natural wear, and affect how it feels when being picked.

When ever doing anything like this always check for any marring, use a small file to correct flaws and test the cylinder several times. It should be ok the spring usually does very little damage.
Hi. That link Stray provided me actually solved my problem. I didn't realize that you had to pop a ring off of the knob to get the cylander out. Thanks for your help.
