Questions about rakes

Postby d_goldsmith » 29 Oct 2006 16:01

I'm confused on how rakes work. Is it basically like a bump key pick? Raking just pops the driver pins up enough to catch? I'm assuming this is not correct, which is why I can't get my rakes to do anything for me

Well the idea is as the rake moves over the pins, it lifts them to a bunch of different heights, one of which will hopefully set the pin at the shear line. This is why rakes are always of varying heights, and shapes, and never straight.

are you familiar with snap guns? rakes work on a similar principle. the "vibrate" the pins quickly until they find the shear line. keep in mind that when raking, pins need to move relatively freely, so the technique requires less tension than single pin picking. also, try different patterns of raking. sometimes, rake from back to front. sometimes, front to back. sometimes, move the rake up and down, in and out, simultaneously. (kinda like patting your head and rubbing your belly at the same time) come up with your own patterns. it still takes practice, of course, to get the right feel for tension and raking pattern. keep it up and you'll pop one sooner than later.
