I've done both heavy card and laminated heavy card. I think the laminated is best for business like hotels and gas stations, where the card should withstand years of being shuffled around in a desk drawer.

hey - would someone please get rid of the spammer up above?
as for business card design - I go for the KISS method - Keep It Simple Stupid! no images, no irrelevant data - give the minimum data you want people to know - contact matters and se' tu. Quality of the paper you print it on is very important too, it has to be thick and "smell" high-end. nice texture - bit rough maybe..and you got yourself a business card that says - i'm a professional!

Initial draft -- opinions?
http://degreesofclarity.com/misc/businesscard.pdf
Not sure about: wording of "heavy discounts" (I wanted to indicate that it's not just like five crummy dollars, but a significant amount), some of the alignment, anything I may have missed, prominence. May or may not have color, not sure where I'm having 'em printed.
These are both for hand-arounds and to sprinkle hither and yon as part of my marketing.
That license number is just a placeholder, by the way, I don't have mine yet... but state law requires name/number to be displayed on all advertising.

... and, now that I print it, I'm not sure if the text is too small.

Oh god, no human being can read that. Here, everything's bigger now... not as pretty in huge zoom in InDesign, but certainly more appropriate at card size.

Not sure about bleed (distance from the edge), I'm getting pretty close here, but I'll have to settle on a printer before I worry about that.

It looks great at full screen size, but I would imagine it's far too crowded on a business card. How about losing the word 'lockouts' x3 ?
Possibly the lines 'lowest rates in S.C.' and 'heavy discounts for students are also superfluous.
Now, thats magic !

regarding the " heavy discounts for students "
are you refering to college students ?
if someone asks you to come
to a residence lockout and they look kinda young
how could you safeguard yourself
in a possible situation like that ?
raccoon
the phone number on your business card
did you have to pay extra to get the numbers

vector: I'm certainly biased because I just love my design. But I don't think there's enough emphasis on being available 24 hours (the 24/7 in the corner is easily missed). Do you have an actual business name?
Scratch that.
I would recommend swapping your business name on top, and the commentary centered in the middle. It also brings the "Emergency Openings" above the italisized text below which describes what an emergency opening is.
pip: no. no additional cost; the number was simply available.
Here's a link to my business card again.

pip: I'd ask for a student ID if I was in doubt; much of the time, though, it should be clear around here, based on appearance and knowledge... I mean, I could ask to see their bong, that'd probably work...
Raccoon/magic: Thanks, I'm fiddling now.

do your clients give you a weird look when you hand them an 8.5x11 business card?

Is the large card for the hard of hearing?
