I just joined a couple days ago, looking for info on good pick sets to buy. Found the templates here and have spent the last two days grinding down hacksaw blades into some usable picks.
I've had the parts of a Master padlock (which had been cut apart) sitting in a drawer for some time. The lock cylinder was still intact, and somewhat exposed without the padlock around it, so I have been using this to practice feeling each pin, and test the effects of each type of lockpick as I finish cutting them. This lock only has 4 pins so it presents a moderate challenge, but I was able to pick it after a couple hours (my first success at a 'real' lock!).
For anyone who doesn't want to purchase one of the transparent practice locks, I would recommend finding a cut padlock and remove the cylinder to practice on. (Try asking at storage units... they cut the locks off of any units that don't pat their bill, and might be willing to give you the locks.)
