i as a magician also carry a handcuff key but that liquid bandaid stuff is great for attaching it to the body in a secret pouch... someone had posted about criss angel with a arm band on picking in the general chatter under extreme lockpicking.... I dont understand why criss didnt just use some of that liquid bandaid stuff to hide the key or pick lucky1406 has a really good handcuff picking video on youtube do a search for his id I believe i read somewhere harry houdiini would actually hide a pick in his skin like under the skin inbetween layers... dunno if thats accurate. but as said most civilians and non magicians really dont need to know how to get out of cuffs they are wearing :D

So here is my semi-useless post for those people who ran into the same problems I did when picking cuffs.

I have a S&W pair that is pretty "tight"

1. can shim with a piece of tape measure but if its double locked a tape measure is too flimsy to take care of it.

2. cant shim with the bobby pin (hair pin) because there isn't enough of an opening.

following the "just stick the end of a paper clip in the hole and push" idea doesn't work either for me so I did what even crows have done before me and bent the bobby pin... yes you read that right, giving a bobby pin atleast a 130 degree angle (90 deg will tend to snap or weaken the pin and last thing you want is a handcuff on that has a wedge of metal keeping you from opening it even with a key. Try explaining that to your parents/wife/fireman/911 operator...).

Now since we are talking about mcgyver type escapes here  and we are assuming we have been thrown in an empty room with only a bobby pin that "natalia _______" *enter russian sounding last name here* lost when kicking you in the face for being a smart ass, and you have no place to bend it, we will muster up all the quick thinking-ness that we can and stick the end of the pin in the key hole and give it a nice little bend.

Now you are free to pick the lock as if you are using the key to open it.

In all seriousness though, just make sure the bent part isn't too long and picking them open will be pretty easy.

And as everyone has already mentioned there are really only two reasons you would ever have to pick cuffs this way...

1. Natalia is coming back and she is bringing her brother Yuri who likes connecting car batteries to things...

2. your GF/Wife locked you to the headboard and left because you arn't sensitive to her emotions... (most likely scenario and best chance of having the bobby pin close enough to get a hold of)

And so we come to the end of my Common sense based and all around useless post.

I've never heard that, though I do know that it was common for his wife to pass him picks mouth to mouth during a final, and rather passionate, good luck kiss. That was how he was able to get past the strip searches and whatnot.

Harry Houdini

Postby lancoff » 5 Nov 2006 15:59

Houdini's wife was often suspected of passing him key from mouth to mouth when she kissed him, but he also had a false tooth from an accident when he was a young man. It was often believed that he was able to hide a pick or very small modified key by pining it underneath his false tooth.

To date, I've only been cuffed once by an actual police officer, and that was done as an escape challenge.

DB if in your mind you thought it was an "escape challenge" then it's ok.

THAT A GOOD LINK ON YOUTUBE, I THINK THAT IT IS GOOD OR SOME PEOPLE, JUST HOPE THAT THE POLICE TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THE PRISONER, BEFORE CUFFING THEM. AS FOR THOSE OVER SEAS, IT IS A GOOD FOR PARTIES AND FOR PRATICAL USE

Peerless handcuff cutaway

Postby whiteknight38 » 10 Feb 2007 14:15

I finally got around to gettign a photobucket account set up. By way of a experiment, I'll try posting a couple of cutaway shots of a handmade, and painted cutaway of a set of police issue handcuffs.

Zip ties can be taken off with a hair pin... all you need to do is file down the end of it so its nice, flat and sharp. After that you should be able to lift up the small "tooth" and slip out.

steel pawl

Postby raimundo » 12 Aug 2007 9:40

handcuff type zip ties have a steel pawl in them, if you want to take off zip ties with a small tool, break off about two inches of one of those mini hacksaw blades, it won't be super speedy, but it will be effective enough if you have to do it.

If your wrist is big there will be enough space in the cuff to actually push down the part (the name escapes me at the moment) with teeth that holds the cuff locked. also above techniques will work with a paper clip or another rigid piece of metal.
