Making Tension Wrenches Out of Allen Wrenches (Hex Keys)

Well I'm a new member, and I'd just like to say hello to LP101. I've been a member for a while but usually have just lurked. I have already made a pick set using my bench grinder (hooks, diamonds, rakes) and have used them for quite some time. However i have never really had a tension wrench and have just used a screwdriver. Anyways i have a question on making tension wrenches out of hex keys. Is there a certain way i have to cut the wrenches? Are they made out of reinforced steel, and if so will they shatter? I have a set of allen wrenches of all sizes just laying around and am really eager, but would just like to take some precautions before making them.

BTW sorry for my bad english, I think i have an infection right now...I'm not sure though; It still hurts

First off welcome to the site.

Well you say you have a bench grinder, just take to the hex keys with that... In my experience they have never shattered or broken, and seem to be real strong.
Just choose one thats two or three sizes to big to fit in the key, and grind ot down so it does...

Here's my first (out of two) hex key torque wrench. I have now moved onto bigger and better things ---2.5mm Welding rods

haha wow thanks for the tip. Its just that i heard reinforced steel (like those on hammers) could shatter if it was subjected to lots of heat and force (like those on a bench grinder), so i j ust wanted to make sure. Thanks for the information along with the picture

yeah just take it slow and make sure you quench when it gets to hot... But you should already know that if youve made a few picks.

Like stated, take it slow and easy. Don't let the metal of the hex "blue up", or if you see it start to turn blue, remove it and let it cool down.

Actually, the heat generated, if you are holding the allen wrench with your hands should definitely let you know you have held it to the grinder a tad too long.

These make great tension wrenches and, frankly, the weight of the handle in some cases is just the right weight to turn the plug.

Several people use these and pick "one-handed." They let the tension wrench do the turning work with no human assistance.
