Safe locks, please DONT give me any info on opening!

Hey all

Ive been looking around on ebay at the cut away safe locks on stands. and would like some advice on different makes and which would give me a good start on safe locks. something with no real clever trickery just a basic rule of thumb safe lock so i can have a play. the Ilco looked like a nice one but without access to the advanced forums i cant have a read through old posts on there. so if anyone on the advanced forums or with any experience with safe locks could advice on brand or models for a basic combination safe lock. to be honest the has no practical use for me as combo arnt really used in Europe, but it would look cool on my desk and they really do fascinate me...

I must stress that i am NOT interested in ANY techniques used to open them as i know that discussing opening safes is strictly forbidden on the open forums and the last thing i want is the mods to get wound up with me so please. NO info on opening them. i don't want the thread to get locked after all.

from what we mostly use in australia the S AND G would be the best, but go for anything that would be 3 heel and a resonable brand, waht do you want to learn? how it works or manipulation?

Either the Ilco 673 or the Lagard 3330 would be perfect for learning manipulation, but that S&G 8500 series is a Group 1R lock and a very nice safe lock to have for collecting purposes (I have an identical one from the same seller) and to help understand the mechanism, but it's definitely not a manipulatable lock, practically speaking.

Definitely get a clear understanding of what the various UL ratings mean and the differences between them, that should be one of your first priorities if you're learning about safe locks. I think Blaze's paper covers it enough to understand the basic differences between Group 1 and Group 2 (and I also think there's been some very extensive and detailed posts on here explaining it, at least one of which was made by me).

Hey, im interested in learning first off how it works. and then later on if i gt access to the advanced forums at some point in the future manipulation could be fun. but just to get a feel for how they work and whats going on in side.

Had my eye on an antique yale safe lock as well which i asume woudl be beter to learn on for manipulation but im not really interested in being a safe cracker until MI5 pick me up and i become an international man of mystery

So ya its really just an interest in whats goin on in them and a look at the basics.

To be honest i should probably slow down a bit, maybe concentrate on a single aspect of picking/manipulation until ive mastered that but u know how it is. and i figure after xmas when ive got the cash i may as well pick one up while i can.

if i where to get in to manipulation as a hobbiest in australia, i would pick a lock that was regulally used hear, because your in the UK you should look at what is mostly used their, but also go for something simple.
when playing with the lock think about how each part works with the other, and what flaws the lock has.
but because i do this for a living i am lucky enough to be shown these things.

combo locks aren't really used in Europe. its mostly lever locks from what ive seen. or what looks like lever locks with a 2 piece key.

but atm they don't have much of an interest to me. well not lever locks on safes. but thanks for the advice. all the other locks i pick are euro locks or padlocks avalible here.

There really isn't any difference in what is found in Australia compared to other parts of the world.

We have alot of Ilco and S&G though, and i have even seen a few Lagard.

the cutaway locks are quite pricey but it is so easy to buy a normal com s&g or la guard and cut the appropriate sections out yourself, i always have them on ebay
