I'm 13 and need to convince my parents. Help please!!!

I'm 13 and my parents think I'm crazy when I want lockpicks and tension wrenches. Can anyone give me ideas and suggest a good cheap pick set? I was thinking about telling them that other people start this hobby when they're young.

i'm 16 and my dad thinks it's okay while my mom freaked out initially and now seems pretty apathetic. just tell them that it's a legitimate hobby and that you intend to only pick your own locks or locks that you have been given explicit permission to pick. you could also show them this site, that might help

you have to ease them into this. make sure to search the site, as there are a few really good threads on this. one is titled convincing my pops.... or something of the sort.

there is also the LSI guide i think, and a few other documents that are helpful.

one thing is to add in that you might be interested in a locksmithing job, not as your career, but as a hobby/side thing. it helps.

I am sorry to say but your to young... its very uncommon to have people your age learn lock picking and then not misuse the knowledge they have gained. I am not saying you would but just that its common for your age group.

I personally see nothing wrong with a 13 year old picking locks *with parental permission*.

As for convincing your parents:

Here's what you DON'T do:

- Don't whine.
- Don't yell.
- Don't pester.
- Don't defy them.

Here's what you DO want to do:

- Speak to them as a responsible young teenager.
- Explain calmly, perhaps over dinner, why you'd like to learn to pick locks.
- Explain to them the importance of ethics within the locksport community.
- Show them the benefits of this hobby.
- Assure them that you're not an idiot (you're not, right?) and that you would never even THINK about picking a lock you shouldn't.
- See if you can't work out an arrangement under the condition that the picks do no leave the house.
- Stick to your promise or you'll lost their trust and they'll have good reason for it.

One Idea is to try and get one of your parents involved. Its something you can do together.

Yeah..i'm 15 and i understand you..it's hard to tell your parents...but...do it...if they agree ok...if don't,do what you think....but tell them that it's a hobby.

Are you trying to get them to buy you picks, perhaps you should think more about making picks. you can do it, start with patience and skill will come.

no reason you shouldn't pick locks as long as you are responsible with it. look at "Jason13" (Now 14) he started at your age and has never looked back. show them this thread and point out "Digital_Blue" is a Moderator on the site. asle show them the link he gave you. or print it out and ask them to give it a read.

Anyone else remember the videos of peter, hes like 8 or 9 and can rake and bump locks open better than I can.

I started picking at age 13, which would be a little over 8 years ago now. I remember the day my parents found out - I never told them. They walked out into the garage to see what the noise was, I had purchased my first bench grinder and was grinding some hacksaw blade picks. My dad looked over my shoulder and said "what are those?" And I said, "they're lockpicks." Haha He didn't say anything so it went over pretty well, but you should have seen the look on his face.

Hey, thanks alot guys I didn't realize there where guides to this, I wouldn't have made this if I had. I haven't tried making a pick yet, but I'll try and make one before I get a cheap pickset. My mom thinks it's okay, but she makes fun of me, but I have to buy all my own stuff. (Which I was expecting I was asking about buying not if I could have money.)

NOT RECOMMENDED: is to be like one in a shop class I was in... he would pick all the (cheap warded) padlocks on the cabinets in the shop and make a daisy chain out of them. By the second time around, the shop teacher knew exactly who it was. He also blamed that guy for ANYTHING, missing WD-40, sandpaper, etc.
