Any suggestions on how to go about picking this lock? It appears to have 6 tumblers. I keep oversetting pins. I'm also having a hard time feeling out the pins in the back of the plug. (This is my first lock I've tried, as I don't have access to other locks.)

Is that a push button lock on the inside knob? What name is stamped into the latch plate on the side of the door?

Aha, the culprit is Schlage. It has the push button opition (from the inside only) and the full lock opition (from the outside.)

Well, it's not guaranteed that the latch plate and the cylinder are definitely the same brand, but assuming that this is so, you'd be better off learning on a Kwikset or Defiant. They are less than $20US at Home Depot or Lowes or Wal-Mart. You'd be doing yourself a favor to pick one up and practice digital_blue's pyramid training exercise. This is what I personally did when I started picking and found this site, and it has made all the difference. I will suggest picking up a Kwikset deadbolt because the pins are retained by an easily removeable and replaceable metal cap for simple repinning. Mine cost $12.50US and I live in a high cost of living area. The Schlage may or may not have security pins in it. Because you don't know for sure, it's not the place to begin. Let us know how you get on.

I appreciate the lengthy suggestion. I will do just that, and scrap the Schlage idea. Thanks mfschantz.

I think I may need to add 'Don't pick locks that anyone relies on (you, me or whoever)
Just judging by the brick and colour of the walls I'd say that this is some sort of institutional building (school, public building, dorm...ect...) ......

I think the word we're looking for is own. If you don't own the lock, don't mess with it. Unless a friend hands you a padlock and says, bet you can't pick it, don't be walking up to padlocks on businesses, gates, etc, or school doors, office doors, dorm doors, supply closets.

Even if this is your dorm room door and you have a key, you still don't own the lock. Visit Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Lowe's etc.. they have plenty of locks in the $5 to $30 range.
