I bought a cutaway lock for practicing when I first started out. They're really good for demonstrating how a lock works, but not so great for learning how to pick. The only useful thing I learned from mine is that I was lifting the pins way higher than I needed to in order to set them at the shear line. Other than that, I found mine to be counter productive as I was relying on my eyes to tell me what was going on and not the feel of the pick in the lock. I learned much more from the Kwikset deadbolt cylinder I bought to practice on, and it was a lot cheaper than the cutaway I got.
