I like it. It's just a shame ink cartridges are a bit more rare than aluminium cans.

That is very clever. I would have never thought of it.

Would these pieces also be thin enough to work as shim stock?

Eyes only,

Judging with my eye on the pictures I would say they are way to thick for cylinder shims.

How do these hold up in comparison to the pop can shims (which are practically one use, but incredibly easy to make)?

Lookin good. From the pics they seems as though they would be more durable than soda can shims.

Another great shim material is the steel measuring tape from a 25' tape measure 8) . Very strong material.

Thats a great idea! One wouldn't run out for quite a while with 25'!
I'll have to try that.

Got a tape measure and tried it out. Worked great, except I cut up my fingers pretty badly (couldn't stop, must have done it more than 20 times 'till the first shim broke). Need to figure out some material to cover the edges of the shim with. Duct tape might work (like in the photos  ).

Also, I have an ink cartridge like the one shown in the photo, but it is the wrong one for my printer, and it's opened, so I don't think it's returnable. It is still full of ink, would this be a problem in trying to get the necessary metal part out?

Maybe I should go to a local Office Max and see if I can buy some of the used cartridges they collect to send back . . . Think they would sell me some?

Doubtful cartridges cost a lot because the Manufacturers spend so much putting things in that make them hard to copy. the old ones are generally refilled and reused.
