I had found a few service manuals online for SFIC locks, and they numbered from tip to bow. Is it different for regular locks?

FAQ section is kinda cluttered. I am going to try to clean it up tommorrow, or do something about it. But yes, it will be done soon.

Schlage SFIC and others

Postby Romstar » 12 May 2004 23:51

CatCube, you asked:

It is indeed. For some strange reason, SFIC systems are counted from the tip, whereas normal locksets are counted from the bow.

I've never been sure why this is, it's just something I got used to I suppose.

From the Schlage SFIC service manual:

Since the Everest patented core is designed to replace cores by Best, Arrow and others, Schlage's key cuts are read and written TIP to BOW. This is the opposite of other Schlage keys but standard for small format IC.

That pretty much sums it up. Now it looks like I have something else to try and figure out.

ROFL, A very verbose post. Just like mine. :) Lots of good info though. the way i like it :) I think it should be cleaned up a little bit (formatting mostly) and reposted as a sticky tutorial in an appropriate category.

sfic's are numbered differently because Best keys have the keystop at the tip of the key ,not the bow. That's what the little riveted plate and the funny looking C-clip on the back of Best cylinders are for. They're built that way so 7 pin keys can still be used in 5 or 6 pin locks.

Going back to Romstar's post - if you try and explain something as clearly as possible (especially trying to describe something requiring physical dexterity) it can become really long and confusing.

If you don't believe me try and write a detailed description of tying your shoelaces in less than half a page of A4 (this is why I wear slip-ons!)
sledgehammers make excellent back up picks!

Seems like this requires a nice photoessay with step by steps, OR a quick peek into the kwikset service manual.
