My LockWall

Postby CompFX » 1 Apr 2007 22:45

This is something I made for fun and practice. I call it my LockWall, sort of a spin off of a rock wall. Anyways I thought I would share it. Maybe give others ideas, and to ask for opinions and suggestions.

The first 8 locks are all kw1 keyed Ilco. I have repined them and as you go down the line they get harder and harder. The last few are way out of MAC and some have had spools and serrated pins. I have also dropped in pins from, I don't know where they came from. I believe one was a #8 yale pin. But I am not for sure. Talk about a challenge!!

The last 5 locks are Yales. Repined and the last ones are beyond MAC's.

Then I have a Huffy 7 pin tubular bike lock.

Under all of them I have:

Latch Lock - Wafer
Tiny Lock - Wafer
Filing Cabinet Lock - Wafer
Filing Cabinet Lock - Wafer

On the padlock rail in order with the pics:

Unknown - 30MM - Pin
Unknown - No. 1 - ward (very old)
Master Lock - ? - Ward
Master Lock - No.3 - Pin
American - AL3 - Pin
American - ? - Pin (issued by the US Air Force)
American - ? - Pin (issued by the US Air Force)
American - ZFJ - Series 1105 - Pin

Tricircle - ? - Pin
Fulton - ? - Wafer
No Name combo lock
Master Combo lock
Brinks Combo lock
Master Bookbag lock Combo 3 wheels

Master lock - ? - Pin (Luggage)
Master Lock - No.10 - ward (luggage)

All the keys for the padlocks

Move-N-Store - SD70 - Dimple (Disc Lock)
Kryptonite - ? - Pin

All in all there are 37 locks on this wall. I still have more locks, but they are in door knobs and once I get them out I am not sure how I can mount them on this wall.

I have left plenty of room for future expansion as I do plan to get some more difficult locks on here. But most of the ones I see that I want are from $80 to $150 bucks and my wife might have something to say about that!!

Anyone have ideas as to what else I should add to this wall?

For the locks in door handles. Drill the appropriate sized hole, and install without the latch. Thus you don't need a crossbore.

I want to take the plug and shell out of the door knob. Ill probably have to drill a hole and then use a saw and cut the pin tower out of the wall by hand. I just don't know of a way to make it stay in the wall without permanently attaching it. I like to repin my locks after they get to easy to pick.

As a last resort, I will probably either mount half the door knob, or make another LockWall with just door knobs on it.

Probably wont have time to mess with it until next weekend.

Awsome job. I see you have a taste for yale locks. And do I see a few auto lockout tools in the far bottom left corner as well? :D

if you buy your locks as and when you can afford them you'll soon get a little collection going.

Thank you all.

I lucked out. There was a hardware store closing and I snatched up all the Ilco's for a buck a piece. Also got a couple of padlocks for about the same price. I bought two of each of the padlocks from that hardware store so I could I could make cut-aways and show others how they worked.

The other locks Ive collected over the years. My late uncle was also into locksmithing and when he passed I was able to obtain a few locks.

The Kryptonite I got for dirt cheap. There were two locks in a package for $7.99. Hell I couldn't pass that up as I have heard these are really nice locks. At the checkout they scanned for like $49 bucks. I almost had a stroke. I told the guy where I found them. He had someone go find them and sure enough, there were several others there for 8 bucks. They still honored the 8 dollar price, but quickly removed the sign. I almost felt bad about that. But there again they could have not honored it and I would not have put up a fight. After leaving the store I was thinking about it and became thankful the person that stocked the shelves was not a doctor!!

The whole reason of this LockWall is because I am wanting to start a locksport group in my area and thought it to be something others can learn with and play with.

I have thought of timing myself to see how long it takes to open every lock on this wall, but have yet to do that.

This LockWall comes with some weight. Its probably about 30 lbs right now. The Wood is actually double think (total of 1.5") so that there is nothing poking out the back of the wall. This is not exactly something you could take with you on a plain ride, or even a long car trip. I have other toys for them boring moments.

Well my wife and kids are waiting for me to come to supper. Ill post back in a little bit.

Welcome to the forum and welcome to your new home as this is a very addicting place to hang out.

Unless you can pick the locks up ultra cheep, I wouldnt not suggest buying a bunch of the same keyway. For example, I have 8 Ilco's on this board, which are a kw1 keyway. I wish the hardware store had more to offer as I would loved to have a better selection of locks. But this is all they had so I got what I could.

If you are in the states, I would suggest Kwikset, slage, then yale. If you are else where I have no idea. There are others as well, but if you are learning, them are sort of like stepping stones to a good start. After you are good at these, you will probably be in the same boat I am currently in. Any lock that looks like it could present a challenge is beyond the means of a hobbiest budget. But there again, can you really put a price on knowledge?

In the mean time, keep your eyes open and buy what you can afford. Locks are as common as rocks. If you watch, locks will start popping out of the woodwork... sales, closeouts, clearances; garage/yard sales, auctions, and countless other places. Locks will just start showing up everywhere once you keep a sharp eye on them.

Believe me, you can get nice locks cheap if you keep your ear to the ground and ask people who don't know much about locks if you can have theirs.

Very nice.

I work on pad locks most of the time. Just keep mine in a ball so I can work on the couch.

wow, great job! Very space efficient. Nice selection of locks, too, and i like the way you've laid them all out. Now all you need is a safe lock, maybe some auto locks, and a couple sidebar locks, that would be the ultimate wall.
It's ok guys, i have a really bad attention sp-wow look, a beach!
