Wafers?

Postby Samuraijack » 3 Apr 2007 0:29

I was wondering what wafers were in a lock. I'm new to LP and I don't understand some of the terms that everybody uses and I was wondering if you have a topic that explains what each term means.I was also wondering if you could use a regular pickset to pick a car. I wouldn't be able to practice where I'm at but I just wanted to know.

Wafers are flat discs that has a hole in the middle that allows the correct key to lift it to the proper height. This site here has tons of illustrations and animations that will make things more clear, http://deviating.net/lockpicking/topics.html. As for car locks, yes they can be picked with a regular picks set but it is very difficult in most cases and that would also fall under the advanced catagory so discussion on the subject would have to end around here. Hope that helps.

There's some confusing terminology here. By my understanding, auto locks use disk lever locks, and cheap filing cabinets use wafer locks. The ideas are similar, but I've picked wafer locks open in 5 seconds with a pair of paperclips. Note that I'm not bragging about this--they really are that flimsy.

Maybe someone can clarify the usage of "wafers."

What?!?!?!?

I have never heard of a disk lever lock,

A wafer lock is a wafer lock and uses wafers, car wafer locks are wafer locks funnily enough unless they are pin locks,

But of course auto discussion is NOT for the public forums,

A wafer is a flat pice of material that is slid from one point to another and back in the same axis to create a shearline when used in conjunction with other wafers,

I too have never heard of disk lever locks but it gave me a new idea for a lock, think levers mixed with abloy discs. The lock consists of multiple wheel packs and in order to turn it one has to raise the correct discs from 3 or 4 wheel packs to an empty position and then rotate them to the correct corresponding angles and push the key in to engage the bolt/switch mechanism. This would most likely be too large for a car door/ignition but would make an extremely mean building/vault lock.

Now I got to spend a few hours in solidworks to see if I can model this disk lever lock.

Here are some pictures of a simple "5 Wafer" lock that I opened.

The first one is of the wafers themselves and the cylinder beside them.

The second is the cylinder with the wafers in.But without the key.

And the third is the cylinder with the wafers and key.

Sorry about the quality of the second and third images.

Hope this helps.

Looks like I got my terminology wrong. I'll look at it and post in autos.
