Opinions about this tubular pick?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Opinions about this tubular pick?

Postby scorpiac » 21 Mar 2007 19:06

Lately I have been thinking of getting a set of tubular picks. I've looked at alot of different ones online and I'm leaning towards this set http://www.lockpicktools.com/images/tub ... kpick8.jpg They are from Southern Specialties. I've been very happy with other products of theirs I've purchased as well as their customer service that's really the main reason I'm leaning towards their set. So my question is does anyone have any hands on experience with this particular set, I've seen lots of discussion about the South Ord tubular pick but haven't seen anything on here about this set? They sound pretty good, a description of the tool can be found near the bottom this page http://www.lockpicktools.com/lockpicks.htm any info anybody has about them would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Phil.

Well, on your second link it shows that pick being about $280. For that price I would save up a while longer and get the peterson tubular pick.

Behold: http://peterson-international.com/tubularlockpicks.htm

I don't own this pick but from what I understand it is the Creme de la creme of tubular pickery. You can see on that link all the accessories it comes with too - including your octagon bit. Expensive? Yes. But I think that's about as good as it comes.

It looks just like the HPC, which is a hard-boiled piece of lock pick engineering (that's a compliment :D )

Exodus5000: I am actually referring to the the 2 picks above the $280 one... $69 & $79 0r $130 for both.

Shrub: Just hobby, I know most say tubular picks are not necessary for hobbiest "just do them manually it's more fun" but in addition to being a hardcore hobbiest I am also a real sucker for gadgets :)

Listed Specs:
· The body is made from stainless steel
· Tempered stainless steel picking fingers
· Hardened spring steel key for positive engagement of keyway
· Scalloped pin relief for added strength
· Adjustable friction collar to set friction to a light feel or a complete lock up.(desirable for setting picking needles to the enclosed Decoder Key.)
· Stainless steel decoder key for accurate settings

I am assuming by "The body" they are referring to the barrel and I am thinking being made of stainless is a big plus as I seem to remember the thing most people have issue with on the South Ord one is that the barrel is made of brass and not very durable. Please correct me if I am wrong.

No i was asking hobby or trade as i wouldnt suggest them for trade use,

They seem alright, personally i dont like the chamfered tip and see no reason for it,

I would also have liked to have seen spring steel feelers instead of stainless ones (the tempered part is total rubbish if you ask me),

But having said that yes they seem fine, the handles on the SO's are also prone to rotation after a bit of use which this one wont do, it looks quite well finished from the pics and seems to be made from the right materials,

I suggest you contact them and make sure the actual stem that the feller picks run on is stainless steel and if so i would go for the 8 pin one and do the 7/8 pin conversion as the stainless will hold up a lot better than the brass SO ones, that said the conversion on mine is still goign strong so a stainless one should be fine,

Otherwise if you dont want to start drilling new picks getthe 7 pins one as 8 pin arent common,

Mybe have a look at the hpc range, i thought there was one caled the peanut pick that was around $35 but im not sure,

if your a gadget guy like me save your money. There are tons of better tubular picks out there that are more versitile than that one.If your just looking for a tubular lock pick to get bored with in 5 mins go with shrubs suggestions and get the peanut from HPC.

As a proud owner of the Pro-1, I can say its a great bit of work. Its alot heavier and MUCH larger than any other tubular pick I've used. The lock your picking really needs to be mounted, or have something to hold it steady. This pick requires two hands to operate. However, it is very expensive. But, it is cheaper to buy the pro-1 and a few tips (ie the octagon tip) then buy all the seperate picks for those locks.

The video that comes with the pick is pretty good and funny at one point as well.

7pin 8pin

Postby raimundo » 28 Mar 2007 11:51

7 pin is by far the most common, but it comes in 3 variants, the centered, which is common and can be picked by the seven pin pick, and the offsets left and right which cannot be picked by the 7pin but can be picked by the 8pin tool. Never by a 7pin offset pick, they sell them in left and right handed but an 8pin pick opens them as well as the eight pin lock.
So you need a 7 pin first, in the common diameter, there is also an oversize and several smaller sizes if you regard the kryptonite bike locks last use of the tubular before the big sept04 flap.

Scorpiac, did you order these? It looks like a nice set and I'm wondering (if you ordered them) what you think about them.

hesevil, I haven't ordered them yet But I probably will be very soon, I am getting a bonus check at work on Friday :D and I think I am going to get these and some other goodies I've been wanting. Anybody know a good place to buy a Souber Tools MTL pick set or anyone have one they might wanna sell?

I just placed an order for these (the 7 and 8 pin). Hopefully they will be here on Wednesday or Thursday next week, I'll be sure to let you know how they turn out. The fact that these came with the aluminum handle and a stainless barrel is why I wanted to try them... hopefully they will be as good as they sound ::crosses fingers::

Cool, I just got my bonus check today and pretty much had already decided to order the set as well, but since you have already ordered them I may wait for your review before I place my order. I'll cross my fingers too, Please do let me know what you think of them when they arrive.

Thanks, Phil.

Just got them in today Scorpiac. Didn't have time to use them, hopefully tomorrow. I may also include some pics of them. My overall impression though is they look high quality. It definitely does have the stainless barrel, and the feelers move under tension freely with no fine tuning necessary.

Sounds great. I'm anxious to hear what you think after you try them and pictures would be awesome if you get the time. 8)
