Metal irretation

Postby bumber » 11 Apr 2007 2:06

Does anyone who grinds or dremels get irretated*(spell check)skin, from the metal in their skin? I know this may make me sound nasty like"dont that dude ever shower". But some days I do over 50 metal projects with short sleeves or no shirt at all(DO NOT do this not safe) but its hot sometimes. Anyway I think my ? is other than not getting it is there a way to get it out during the day? (if I shower its fine but thats hard to shower 5 times a day)

You are getting a form of dermititus (sp) its a skin condition,

I get a red raw rash that bleeds all over my arms when i come into contact with used oil or cutting fluid which is a pain as i race cars for a hobby and am an engineer lol

Use a barrier cream, this is a cream that you apply before working and then after working it simply washes off, while its on it stops the crap from affecting your arm,

I suggest its not the metal on its own but the dust mixed with coolant (water) thats making the sludge which is affecting you,

Make sure your machines are brushed off after every use and that you take precautions for it not to happen again,

Having said that if its not a slight rash which causes a dry skin that must be itched and once itched then gets worse then consult your doctor, you should not be getting bits off wheels big enough to impale into your skin and cause irritation so it must be another issue,

Finger nails being dirty then scratching yourself is a big no no,

I recently asked a locksmith about old locks and he allowed me to pick some from his brass bucket. Lots of locks in there but also keys, brass plates and lots of brass shavings. I went through it with bare hands and a couple of hours later my hands were all red and swollen and itching. The metal shavings themself are sharp and irritate the skin of course and then when you work on these projects you're usually in a typical slightly dusty dirty work environment, maybe there's coolant and oil and what not on your hands.

Like Shrub said, a barrier cream might be a good idea.
It's not the tools that open the lock. It's me.

A thin coating of Vaseline (petroleum jelly) fills the skin pores, preventing dirt and grease from getting in them. Works under the fingernails as well. I'm not sure how effective it is against metal particles, but it's cheaper than some specialty cream.
This is the internet:
You don't have to capitalize, you don't have to use punctuation, and you don't have to spell correctly. And you will not communicate effectively.

brass

brass and nickel silver have copper in them, the oxides of copper are toxic. if you handle old brass, especially if its turned green, wash your hands before you eat.

Brass swalf is the worst when its broken off in those needle like bits im not surrprised your hands went red, a soak in hot water and then a session under the magnifieing glass is your best bet,
