Depth of the cuts ???

Hello everybody.. im new to lockpicking, and just wanted to get some things sorted out..

Have come over some bumpkey tutorials, maybe not the best start for an lockpicking n00b, but none the less.. i tested to do some 999-keys myself, but had trouble finding the right depth of my cuts..
How much distance (mm) are there between the 9 different depth cuts in a key ???

It depend on what type of key you are talking about. Kwikset, schlage arrow. etc.

Making bumpkeys yourself is kind of difficult especially when you have no experience doing it yourself. You may be better off ordering them online, they are fairly cheap.

A 999 key is a name,

Only some locks have 9 depths others have more and others have less so its not as simple as that,

Tell us your lock and we can tell you your depth otherwise you need whats caslled a depth and spacing chart which tells you the spaces and depths of all locks so you only need to look your lock up and find the s+d for it,

SOme may have 7 so a bump key for those would be 888, some may have 12 so the key would be 131313 etc etc,

Hope this explains it a bit better but you are correct in you assumption, bump keys are useless for a hobby picker and a bad place to learn locks,

I have a small Tri-Circle padlock hanging around, with no key 2 it.. would try to get hands on a 999-key that could get the job done..

the lock also gives the information: 263 (under det Tri-Circle brand) dunno if that gives any help..
After testing with a hook, i presume its an 5 pin padlock.. but really not sure

still a n00b..

Shrub: that depth and spacing chart seems very interesting.. where can i get hold on such a chart?

Is the lock currently locking somthgin up?

Are you wanti ng to get into this hobby or simply come here to open this lock as youve lost your keys?

Depth and spacing charts are useually for people in the industry but there is an online one which some one will link you to as i havent time right now to find you the link im afraid,

The tricircle isnt on the list i thinking of though im afraid,

The tricircle locks are easy to pick once you know how to pick but do have spools i think so maybe start on an easier lock,

If you want to get into the hobby do yourself the biggest favour and that is to forget about bumping right now and get a simpel pickset and learn to pick, bumping isnt picking and isnt somthing a real picker does to open locks,

The lock is currently locking something up yes, and want to get hold of it.. In the normal case before my fascination to lockpicking i would have broked the lock, which should be quite simpel with a bult cutter..
But.. now.. i dont want to mess the lock up

Im reeally interested in getting into this lockpick hobby.. got very fascinated by it, when a m8 of mine opened some big ASSA padlock, in about 20 sec. with some simpel tools..

As i sayd in the beginning.. I know bump keys are not the best starting point, mainly because it has nothing to do with the subjekt in question

but just wanted a quick solution to my problem..

Ok, ill give you an answer but i dont expect you to like it but its the only answer your gogin to get on this im afraid,

You do not play with locks in use, not yours or relied on,

Especially playing around with buming on a lock in use your asking for trouble,

Playing with the lock can dfamage it, playing with the lock and bum keys will damage it,

Call a lockie out to open that lock or shim it yourself, do not try picking it or especially bumping it,

Due to my ethics and the the ethics of the way we run/enter this hobby i will not give you any further tips on opening a lock in use im sorry,

Thats a locksmiths job,

Look up shimming :wink:

Hehe.. i understand and respect it.. Nothing wrong on your ethics m8, never tried to manipulate em'

I just think a call the locki.. he should get the job done..

My fault. I thought he was referring to milimeters with that.

Out of curiousity, what type of major name brand lock does 999 fall onto. Ive never heard that before.

it refers to the number 9 code cut... many brands have 9 as the lowest possible cut some have 7 some 10 some ect...

It also got hold when people called them emergency keys as the emergency number here is 999,
