My hardest lock is that beast, the Master 930 aka 6230. I love big chunky padlocks and heard that this one was tricky so I bought it, took it home and picked it open after about 5-10 minutes of trying. Oh well, I thought, there's a waste of thirty bucks. Well, that was 2 months ago and I think I've picked it twice since, and definitely not in the past three weeks or more despite almost daily attempts.

I'm totally stumped, and I even try it out with the key periodically just to convince myself that there is nothing mechanically wrong with it! I can pick other Masters with spools, Abus 90/50 and 34/55, and a bunch of 5- and 6- pin mortise cylinders (Schlage, Sargent, GMS, Falcon, American) but that 6230 is making me look bad.

The hardest right now for me is just a Sargent six pin. Which is the first 'tougher' lock I've ever tried. Hence why I came to this site and registered, so I could get tips. Unfortunatley it's in the advanced section haha. So I guess I'll just have to wait awhile before getting those tips.

Sargent 6 pin is not in the advanced forums. If you cannot find any info by searching you can start a thread about the lock. There is really nothing special about these locks other than good tolerances.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Alright thanks. It just said on the advanced section that there is info about more difficult locks such as sargent, but I'm assuming now it meant the other type of sargent locks not the six pin.

I'd like to update--I'm up to the Brinks Shrouded 6 Pin. But I would say the hardest at the time of picking for me would be the Kwikset UltraMax (I think that's the name) deadbolt cylinder. That lock was fairly advanced for my picking skills at the time, now I just blow through it in seconds.

yeah....this might break my rep, wait what rep? oh well....

master no. 532 is kicking my butt. i had all the pins set, and the last pin overset. it is a long pin, and i just couldnt get it to set, i keep oversetting it. and its binding order is like 1/2 way through. i had all but the last, and i couldnt get it down without dropping the rest. *sigh*

thats probably my hardest. and its all high low. other than that. i havent had the pleasure of playing with any high security locks yet, i dont spend much money on locks and such. though i want to.

ive got too many posts to be THIS dumb.

I have to agree; that that *&$#&*& Master Lock (6230) is the toughest SOB I have ever had to deal with. I come across these at work. We have done a lot of things and end up calling for a code from master (& using a code machine as impressioning them is not easy either!).

ONCE - I got one open. Turns out it had a very simple key structure: 4;6;4;6;3 or something like that; as I HAD to find out what the key looked like I went there after work some days later to see the "lost" key....They thought I was nuts.

Actually I have a large number of high-end Master Pad locks as that is what I really do need this skill for (aside from fun, of course). So I have collected about two dozen 9630 and 930/950's. Some of them I can get but the cuts have to be simple. high-low cuts on that lock set me back. - There is just too little room. I did actually make a rake to get them and have had a bit of luck with it. It had to be .020 or less and have a long sweep to the pick blade.

Another *&^$#^%*!! is the Master Lock #15. It's a big boron shackled SOB. With a very well made cylinder that sits in a loose housing! So the feel is very disturbed. I've got it once or thrice but it's soooo inconsistent!

The biggest stumbling block I have found to the 9630 or the 950 or old 930 is the strength needed to turn the key (or wench)....IMO this issue and the fact that there is no spring to "pop" the shackle makes it EVEN tougher. Actually, These are my favourite items to work on. - They are my "goal" for this year.

It was either a sargent or a russwin with 6 pins, 5 of them spools, took me about 8 minutes.
If you can't make it work try yelling "aww d*****t!" and throwing your tools it never worked for my pops but it entertained me :)

This one's tough...

It's some sort of tie between my American 5200 padlock, my Kaba Gemini, or the Medeco

The Medeco has been violated 10 times, the American 2 times and the Kaba 2 times. I think the American padlock's serrated pins give me more trouble than the Medeco's tight tollerances.
