Some questions

Postby Gamemania » 14 May 2007 23:40

I'm new at lockpicking and have read some tuts already and have some questions :)

(pin tumbler)

1. how can i know if i have reached the last pin?
2. is it possible to use a bent safety-pin or paperclip as a hook (specify please :)) and a screw driver as a tension wrench?
3. what happens if i put to much force in the wrench?
4. can i use a straigh paperclip or sfety-pin , insert it through the lock and bouch the clip/pin up and down and make all the upper pins in to the housing ?

Think some more , but cant think of them right now :D

Welcome to the forum. Most of the answers and a whole lot more can be found in DB's guide:

http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?t=10677

If that doesn't help the search button surely will.

1) You kinda just feel where the last pin is. If your not sure how many pins are in the lock put your pick all the way to the back and lift them all and slowly slide the pick out. Each pin will click as it falls back down.

2) And yes it is possible to use both safety pins and paperclips as picks, but its very very frustrating when your begining. You would be better of grinding out your own picks, or buying a set. I've never tried a screwdriver as a tension wrench but i've heard of it being done. It seems like it would be too awkward and not have any feel though.

3) Depending on how much you mean by too much you will either bend your tension wrench or just make the lock alot harder to pick. The lighter you are the the wrench the easier it will be.

4) You can try but I find it hard to imagine that working very well.

pick depth

look at your keys, then get the gf's nail polish and polish the part of your pick shaft that is closer to the handle and leave the part that is as long as the key from tip to shoulder unpolished, by the time the polish wears off completly you will have internalize the lesson or you will have to get out the nail polish again.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

If you put too much pressure on your tension wrench you can end up bending your pick tool as well since you'll need to exert more lifting force with the pick because the pins are bound real tight.

And a screwdriver is not really the most ideal tool to use as a tension wrench since it is very easy to apply too much tension with something as big as a screwdriver. Try making your own wrenches out of better materials like a stainless steel windshield wiper inserts. Just take the wiper blade apart, slip out the inserts, cut them to size and put a 90 degree bend at one end.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture
