A few beginner issues...

After seeing how romanticized lockpicking is in movies, television and video games, I decided I wanted to try for myself and see what its all about. Knowing nothing about locks, I set out with an old doorknob lock from the garage, a paperclip, and a bottle of water. After about 5 seconds I knew something was missing, after a little internet research I realized it was the tension wrench.
"This is going to need another paperclip" I said to myself.
So I rigged together a tension wrench and gave it another attempt. But I reached a problem, the second binding pin was the furthest in the back, and my paperclip just wasn't holding up.

I have a pick set coming in the mail soon, but I feel like I just can't just give up on doing it with the paper clip.

I took the lock apart so it just has 3 pins now, I can get the first two, but I can never reach the third one without hitting the first two and pushing them too far above the shear line. I tried adding a 'hook' at the end to pry the pins up with, but any hook big enough to get that leverage action seems to jam up too much.

So my question is, how exactly are you supposed to lift the pins up? Do you anchor the shaft of the pick near the opening and push down to get leverage? Or do you lift the whole pick up, but if thats so, how do you not mess with the front pins that are already set?

That's the puzzle of picking right there. I'm surprised your paper clips didn't start bending when they warmed up from your hands -- where do you buy your office supplies? Try reading the stickies on single pin picking.

OK don't use paperclips.

Search the forums for lockpick templets, you can make picks out of hacksaw blads, and wrenches out of street sweeper bristles, or Whishield wiper blade incerts.

Now go make them, you will learn nothing from paperclips they will just bend and most likely break in your lock.

Paperclips and bobby pins are only for party tricks.

I would like to be able to do it with a paperclip. Just because they are so easily obtained. Everyone has a paperclip, but its not easy to always get your hands on a file or whatnot.

Once you learn how to fashion lockpick tools out of hacksaw blades with files and other simple hand tools you'll be able to whip up emergency tool sets out of stuff from dumpsters if such a situation ever arises. But you have to know the basics first before you can get that good. You can't be expected to start a camp fire if you've never seen a fire in the first place. Know what I mean?

I am only saying not to use paperclips for the safety of your locks. Your too new to lock picking to use them. HEY I am too new also. Learn the basics first with real tools.

Wait until your pickset arrives and you will find that your question will probably answer itself. You will be suprised how much difference a real set of lock picks will make compared to paper clips.

and the first thing you would know is that you just lost about 30$ or plus!

man I had to wait for about 6 months to get my set!!

Your local army surpls might have them, you will need to ask. Most likely they will need to order them.

If your a young kid they might not sell them to you. So get your parent to ask for you.

Bobby Pins work better than paper clips,

Ignore the paper clips and bobby pins etc,

Start the right way with real picks,

Playing around comes after youve learnt to pick, i still have yet to shove anything paperclip or boooby pin looking into a lock,
