goldmine of pick making material

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

goldmine of pick making material

I found this in my storage room at work gathering rust on a shelf. Before I even got into picking I got this stuff from somewhere and put it on a shelf knowing one day I would make picks or something out of them.

That time has come.

I think these are hacksaw blade blanks. Bonus: there are no annoying saw teeth to grind down. Compared to my Peterson picks which are .024 inch thick, these blanks of spring steel are .022 inch thick.

The middle blank was wet sanded with 320,400,600,800, and 1000 paper.

pics are huge, so here are the URL links

Good thing you found them sooner rather than later, they would have been in worse shape seeing that there are still some pit markings on the one you sanded. Nothing some really good sanding coudn't take care of.

Have fun with them.

Ooh, spring hacksaw blanks. I'd go and make more than just picks with those. ;)

And I thought I was the only one having a hard time cutting down the saw tooth on the blades. :D

quick rust removal

Postby Peter Martin » 3 Aug 2007 8:35

That is an excellent find! Are you sure they used to be hacksaw baldes?

To remove the rust fast, use a rubber polishing wheel on a Dremel tool. I use this company because they have a wider variety of grits available than the standard Dremel brand name. Not to mention they are much cheaper. You'll save yourself a lot of work with a rubber polishing wheel.

Let us see the final work when you're done.

Now that exactly the kind of sand paper I was looking for. My picks would look even better than they do already.

Why not just leave the teeth on? Personally, I think it gives a little better grip.
