Yes, this means that anyone with an operating key for a lock within the institution would be able to file down the key to a bump key, but this is true of MANY locks, including Medeco and other high security locks.

Scorpion is not the only one with this business model, as much of the industry operates this way. Unfortunate? Yes. Uncommon? No.

We definitely agree that it's unfortunate that so many firms operate that way. I wonder if it will change in the future.

Incidentally, I didn't know that about Medeco! Can you really make a working bump key for them if you know the cut angles? That could be very useful if you are able to set the sidebar by hand, thereby decoding the rotations.

d_b: In regards to decoding lock cylinders, more than one (generally at least two and sometimes 3 or more depending on complexity) may have to be removed to find the TMK (Top Master Key). Of course, the person doing it would have to have advanced knowledge on how master key systems work to properly do that. Of course, this is a topic for another, more advanced thread.

workstation, you're absolutely right about that vulnerability. so far as i know know that in the case of our city, we are the biggest lock shop and we only have one scorpion blank for everybody who buys from us, and two assa blanks. i'm sure other shops might do things differently, but the fact of the matter is that in a lot of places you could essentially make a regional bumpkey or two. perhaps people still haven't woken up to the problem of bumping.

I got one of these from ebay with 4 extra un cut blanks.
I definately will try the bump method

CX-5 is owned by Locsten now, not scorpion. At least in Canada.

I met with the Scorpion CX-5 people at a locksmith trade show a month or two ago in New England.

Maybe they're just the Quebec area authorized reseller, but it seemed like they are the main company for the CX-5. Here is their information, very nice people to deal with. Vincent De Rose is the man I met that day.

Linty: The Schlage retrofit KIK cylinder I got from them that day does say Scorpion on the key and on the front of the cylinder.

I think they are distributed by CanAm door hardware.

, I said locsten but i mean farpro. Not sure what the relation between the two companies is although I think they are the same. Vincent is the president of the company so far as i know. Really nice guy.
My new CX-5 pamphlets say farpro on them and don't mention scorpion anywhere.

I got a sample at the Yankee convention this year, when I get back to school tomorrow I'll open it up and take some photos. The finger pins are a royal PITA, good luck picking it.
