What kind of pin is this?

I thought it might be a mushroom pin but I thought those were more round on the top, then I thought serrated but they have more serrations don't they? and then there's spool, but I don't think it is a spool because it doesn't look like a spool.

I saw some pins like that one a cheap padlock I dismantled - it had five of them.

It just seems like a variation on a mushroom pin.

THis was from a cheap padlock... Guard or something like that... I ground it down so I could see the workings of it as I pick it.. interesting...

Yeah it just looks like a knockoff spool pin. Probobly not 1/2 as hard to pick, but it still might give you problems. I also found some of those in a lock I took apart.

What kind of pin

Postby Romstar » 28 Jun 2004 1:43

You guys are going to laugh your tails off when I tell you this, but I last heard it referred to as a "bob".

Yes, a bob. Just like it sounds. Now stop laughing so I can explain.

I ran into these things more than a few times, and I asked a few locksmithing buddies about them. It seems that these pins were never meant to "stick" like spool or mushroom pins.

What they are meant to do is "bob' the plug, hence the name. Apparently when lifting these pins, they often catch the plug just enough to move it and cause already set pins to drop. Since they don't have the same feel as a spool or mushroom pin, they are easy to mistake as a normal driver.

The resultant wasted time and frustration is their primary goal. So, my buddies just called them "bob" pins.

Now stop laughing. It makes it hard to hold a pick. :)

I would if I could, but I am not using my computer. As of two days ago, my computer power supply died.

I am using the girlfriends computer, and I hate the way her desk is set up, and I really hate this keyboard.

I have a Cherry Electronics keyboard, and compared to that, this thing is some kind of torture.

I will try to pay more attention in the future.

LOL. Girlfriends are always such pains....
I have a homemade computer with Dual Processors, so using my gal's little ThinkPad drives me up the wall because I can't have 40 applications running at once.

Oh, it's not that she is a pain or anything. I just can't stand her keyboard. The computer is nicec though. It should be, I built the thing.

As for my power supply, I am going to replace it with PC Power and Cooling's redundant swapable supply. That should get me along for quite sometime. The one that blew was a 400W Enermax.

didn't know enermax made an even 400w supply... and i don't know how the hell you managed to blow it

PC Power and Cooling make good supplies though, i see no point in having a redundant swapable supply though unless you have more then one and it's a server computer where uptime is of utmost importance.

It's an older model. It lists as 450W, but the standard output at operating temperature is around 400W.

Either way, the funny thing is that it didn't "blow". Its suffering from a serious under volt condition. I'm still getting all the amps I need, it just can't keep up the voltage.

I could tear it apart and fix it, but given the cost of these things, I might as well just replace it. I'm too busy lately to fix it. I'll set it on the shelf with a note and fix it when I have the free time.

As for my computer, it is on 24/7 and it's very important that it is available at all times. There are two machines like that in my house, and another one at the shop. This is the first problem I have ever had with an Enermax supply.
