Entertaining, for a hobbyist yes. For the locksmith, irritating.

Yes, I was speaking purely from a lockpicking standpoint for a hobbiest.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

I speak from both sides so I'm very confused and conflicted.

I'm sorry Eyes, I shouldn't have posted in the Locksmith area, no one here wanted to confuse you.

Just bought this lock, and man it is a beauty. I think this is the closest thing to an affordable "high-security" lock for Joe Six-pack. Time to change the locks on my home.

Don't bother. Installing these things on your home is like putting spinner hubcaps on your car. They may be tough to pick but there are about two or three different forceful ways to defeat this lock.

The big problem is not locksmiths or lock manufactuers, It's the consumers. Then again mabye it's just americans... No problem buying a $3,000 TV but protect it and their home with a $15 wal-mart lock. We also fill out garages with junk we don't want and will never use and then leave our $40,000 cars sitting outside.

I guess the basic attitude in the States is that, "If something like a lock is supposed to give me and my family peace of mind, then we shouldn't even have to think about it in the first place."
No wonder the rest of the world is mocking the US.

I think the smart key lock is a very good idea as a consumer,as a locksmith ,I hate to see this product comeing. Hope it goes down like the ever popular KwikSet keyless entry remotes did. Hadnt had any calls for it,so my only experiences was the demo at ho depot.the girl missed the walking billboard I wear as a jacket and tryed to sale me one , Id read on them and knew what they are and what they do, she actually let me play with it,the lock. Black and decker bought kwick set? May see some more changes.

Doug,
did you buy the kwikset smart key off the shelf at the home depot or did you pick on of the displays? I would really like to know.
Thanks

If there no insurance, secure locks would be mandated.

I was at a customers place the other day to quote for installing security cameras. The doors had cheapo Kwikset copies.....and only knobsets. The client wasnt worried about door locks but wanted to catch the bastards on tape. Strange, how the perception of security in the USA is not about the physical products but the desire for an alarm system or electronic surveillance system. People still want to leave their doors unlocked. They would prefer to pay $40 per month to a monitoring company, instead of spending about the same money (over 12 months) that would provide almost impregnable entry's and continue to do so for many more years.
For too many years, Americans have been used to using garbage products on their doors and paying bugger all for them. It's in their psyche now. Similar to the terrorist mentality of the palestinans in the mid east. They are not interested in peace, just the expulsion of Israel from the area and the obliteration of all semites. You cannot change an in-bred perception, so easily.
America was found so wanting after 9-11. I worked for a company that quoted to provide better security at an American embassy in a foreign country prior to 9-11. The quote was knocked back because of the thought of the excessive cost. 9-11 was 2 weeks later. An order came through for the upgrade the following Monday.
If the American government will only make changes after the horse has bolted......they are a government "of the people, by the people, for the people".....it is no wonder that Americans are not pro-active, only re-active.....9-11 is testament to that fact.
sorry for digressing...
