Home made Pick handles

Postby Hojo » 1 Jul 2004 9:25

Howdy all, I am starting to put time into making my picks and mabey spend some money on them :o but the only problem is I need an effective handle, I tryed sliping some of that clear tubing over them but that was a pain in the arse even when heated it was still hard I tryed heaps of ways to get it on...after about an hour I got one on and I was like, Screw this, so I was thinking mabey Plasti-Drip or a few layers of heat shrink but I was just wondering is anyone had any better Ideas...here are a few pictures of my picks so you can tell me what you think might fit on them....(NOTE: this is before i put the handle on one of them)

Oh, and yes these are made of hacksaw blades....and yes I realise one of the hooks is very dodgy....it was going to be a rake till i sliped and buggered it up....so I made that....some of them look a bit wonky but hey....the diamonds look good (I spent time on them) Well thanks in advance

I Like the handles on the Southord MPXS picks, it's an additional piece of metal on each side of the pick handle, looks to be the same thickness as the pick its self... it adds strength to the handle and gives you better grip. Perhaps you could JB weld some handles on if you don't have the proper equipment to put them on. I think HPC picks are riveted, but I've never seen them in person so Don't take my word for it....
I wish the world was flat like the old days, and I could travel just by folding the map.

I recently bought an Exacto knife handle and designed lockpick heads to insert into it - ala Chucklz. Works beautifully. Best handle ever.

I have used aluminium craft knife handles - I found them more suited to rakes rather than hooks as the feedback is not excellent.

What I find most effective is to get some cheap hacksaw blades and fasten one either side of your hacksaw-made pick with super glue if it will hold, otherwise some sort of metal adhesive (welding them is tricky). This makes the pick really quite rigid, then cover the pick in heatshrink.
