Complete Lock Database

Postby reenignE » 26 Mar 2008 16:31

Well, I got kinda bored at work today (tech support... yuch) and I ended up messing about with the Webspace that the University offers for free, and I came up with the idea of a giant lock Database, to supplement my giant lock.(my god I'm turning into a Texan...)

Anywho, I whipped up something real quick. Most of it is still "in progress" and a lot of parts are shakey. Most of the problems are due to crappy webspace, mixed with a bunch of strung together HTML. BUT if this gets any attention at all, I'll definitely consider using a real webhost, and therefore being allowed to use PHP, which would make everything much better.

So, without Further adou, here's the link

https://webspace.utexas.edu/aha393/locks/index.html

The reason I posted this up before I really finished it was to see 1)If there was any interest in actually having something like this and 2) To get a start on the user submissions, so that I don't have to fiddle through things, ask for permission to use pictures and the likes.

Hope you enjoy it :)

Awesome idea, I can definitely see this being a useful resource as it grows. Longhorn Lockpicking has a better web hosting plan through UT than the free webspace, I'll look into it and see if it provides PHP, if so that may be a better place to host it.

It does provide PHP, however the space is WAAAY expensive.

I've got the same plan available to me, but it only offers 5 megs (llpc might have more.)

I think I'ma end up putting this out just cuz its a fun project to work on in my free time.

Lock Wiki?

Postby fjardeson » 26 Mar 2008 21:05

Anyone thought of using the Wikipedia Foundation's tools to build a lock database? That way users could search, and if they have a lock that no one else has posted, they could. Hell, I've got some locks that even the local lockies (some of them are friends of mine) haven't seen, and I'd like to see if anyone else has 'em!

It's been done, you just have to prove you are a locksmith to gain access.

An excellent idea, I hope this will come through! :)
IMO it's just what's missing, we'we got this great forum, put no comprehensive Lock-Web for the locks themselves.

Well it's all in development right now. I'll be sure to keep everyone updated. I just picked up some webspace and a domain name.

Well, several people have started similar repositories, hopefully one of them will actually get momentum behind it. For what it's worth I started Lockenpedia which I've been slowly adding content to. Currently the http://www.lockenpedia.org domain is down due to technical difficulties but should be back soon. Otherwise it can be reached here: http://ibmgeek.shacknet.nu/lockenpedia

I believe it was Raccoon who started something like this some time ago...unfortunately I don't remember the URL. I'll search through my 800,000 bookmarks and see if I can find it.
