Peterson case dimensions

Postby StabbyJoe » 3 May 2008 5:00

Once again I have posted a similar topic on another lockpicking forum, but after many views and no replies I have decided to post an equivalent thread here.

Mostly, I am wanting to know the rough dimensions of the peterson trifold pick case... I am looking to make my own, possibly out of leather, but possibly of a cheaper alternative (suggestions for alternative materials are also welcome)

I am looking for dimensions of individual pockets as well as the whole case.

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to measure their case - I'd love to own a peterson case, but as the postage to my country is too steep I'm trying to make one as close as I can.

Ill dig my callipers out from which ever safe place i left them in that I thought I would remember later and grab you some sizes. but to be honest if you have some peterson picks I would just use them as a guide as in my opinion the peterson case is a little tight anyway.

thanks heaps for getting me those dimensions =)
and I don't have any peterson picks... same reason I won't buy the case... Living in NZ means a $10 pickset becomes a $50 pickset because of postage
So all of mine are homebrew picks made with Romstar's templates

Wow.. thanks heaps for that!

You said roughly 300mm wide... is that the trifold? I'm guessing that if it is, that's all three sections totaling 300, making each 100mm... Cool! I'm going to get onto a little bit of materials investigation and try and source some cheap leather... And thanks for the advice on the pockets being slightly small... might make it 20mm each...

woohoo
thanks again

I hate to guess but id say 75mm tall for the pockets...but I mean are you just looking for a starting point or do you want an almost exact case?
I would take the measurements as a materials list(you may be doing this :?: ) and make it so it fits what you make.

keep us posted about anything you get put together :)

My guess was not based on this, in fact I missed the part about the 150mm high untill I went back to see how wide it was total...my estimate was based on what seems to be an average pick handle, roughly 3" which is 76.2mm so I just made it 75mm to be simple. (im sure it doesnt matter just FYI :!: )

Try eBay

That link is a search of the Australian ebay site for "(skin, hide)". The parentheses tell it to search for either term. Once you find a few, view the seller's stores to see more. Many of them are not listed with "skin" or "hide" in the title but simply "leather". You can imagine how many results you'll get if you search for just "leather". But browse the Crafts>LeatherCraft category too.

I don't know what price range you were looking to stay within but you can find a piece large enough to make several cases out of for about AU $20. Or a smaller piece for less than $10. Of course I have no idea what shipping is like but I would assume that it's not too extreme coming from AU.

If you want to keep it close to the way the peterson case is made then you'll want to use two different leathers. A thicker one for the outer shell and a thin supple one for the pockets so that they form to the tools. The outer shell should be 3-4oz (1.3-1.6mm thick) and the pockets (1.5-2.5oz (.75-1mm thick). Here in the USA leather thickness is described by the weight of one sq/ft rather than a measurement due to varying thickness throughout a single skin.

I haven't worked with any leather yet but I've been reading for a couple of weeks now. Found some good tips here.

I'm about to tackle the exact same project next week and will be ordering some leather from ebay myself (in the USA however). Let me know how you get on with your project and I'll do the same.
