Sidebar picking

Postby robotmaxtron » 20 May 2008 21:55

Well since the medeco is semi-officially not advanced and from what i gather the kwikset smart key is also not advanced i'd like to have the opportunity to ask about picking sidebars.

I understand that the sidebars create a barrier that keep the plug from moving, and that when the grooves in the side of the key line up it retracts. Anybody else care to help enlighten me?

Somebody posted a how to post on these a while back. I don't know where and I have never tried the search feature but I am sure you could find it with a little persistance. But yeah it seemed to be not adavanced. From what I remember it was basically saying pick the middle first on these with varied tension.

With Medecos, the sidebar is a secondary locking mechanism because the pins also block the shear line and need to be picked.
With the Smart Key the sidebar is the only think keeping the plug from turning. Since the pins need to be lifted it's a lot more similar to picking the sidebar of an ASSA high security lock vs. a Medeco (where the pins need to be rotated). The SmartKey is actually quite a bit more difficult than Assa sidebars because the 'teeth' that the sidebar pins interact with are so sharp and deep.

I suggest that you just go to the hardware store and pick up a SmartKey cylinder. They're really tough to pick, but there are also lots of moving parts which lead to lots of other ways to think about attacking them.

How does the smartkey lock hold up to destructive entry?

Quite well, but you are bordering advanced material here.

Quite well? These things bust open with forced applied the right way. What the heck are you talking about? :?
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

i haven't had the chance to mess around with the smartkey lock yet, but I have picked a few medecos. remember that you have to rotate the pins to align the fingers in the sidebar to allow it to retract - be prepared for a little extra resistance at first when the plug turns and the sidebar slides in from the turning motion. here is an exploded view of a medeco. (mods - if this is still indeed considered advanced - please feel free to remove)
