No. You could potentially burn yourself with the steam, shatter the steel like glass?

Not related to lock picking, but while cutting some metal in welding with the old acetylene torch, it popped and i got some hot metal to the face. Right below the eye, worn safety glasses ever since

Give me descipton how in the world you can get metal to shatter when cooled "too fast"? I have never heard or experienced such an event when quenching metal parts in water or oil.

!!! WARNING !!! Movie spoiler alert!

Go watch the movie Alien 3. Watch what they do to the alien near the end. Seeing is believing!!! If it works with aliens, it simply has to work with small metal parts. It's basic movie physics.

I've always worn safety glasses out of habit learned from shop teacher and my own dad. But several times I've had debris ricocheting in behind them with plenty of force, so nowadays I only use glasses that seals solidly to my face. I think it's because my bench is rather low (and myself being a bit on the tall side) so I end up having crap flying at me at very high angles.

I also had a cheap Dremel disc explode once from too high RPM. It was literally disintegrated. Glad I wore my glasses that time..

I have had more than my share of metal in my eyes. Do wear protection..NOTHING is 100% but don't play the odds.
Many of the times I had protection, I found myself at Eye and Ear Hospital in NYC.

One tip: Be careful of what you are wearing. I had gotten stuff in my eyes by taking my pullover sweatshirt off. If you are grinding, filing etc., wear a shop apron, change clothes, or worse case, put a pair of swim goggles on if you need to take a pullover off. A good dose of common sense goes a long way to avoid accidents. MOST can be avoided.
