Tubular Keys Made To Order?

I was wondering if there was some online service for ordering tubular keys already cut to code.

It would be real nice as opposed to shelling out the $300+ for a tubular key cutter that i wouldn't need to use often.

I'd go to a locksmith but the closest one that would provide that service is far enough away to deter me.

also, any suggestions on cutting them myself without special rigs would be appreciated.

Seriously, did you have to make me think of the negative aspects of a service i could get a good deal of use out of?

Regardless of that, if any one knows of a service like that i'm all ears, unless there's an easier way to cut tubular keys.

They do display the ICL badge so are either memebrs of the Master Locksmith Association (BLI) or have undertaken training with ICL (Institute of Certified Locksmiths). Both these are very reputable within the UK and probobly the only 2 really recognised bodies.

on the other hand, for hobbyist lock jockeys like myself, it's an easy way to get a hold of hard to cut keys without putting down the cash for a key cutter (especially if it's a key for a lock that is going to become obsolete more sooner than later like tubular locks)

Most locksmiths are unable to make durable tubular keys as their machines are usually not capable of cutting a steel blank. When you take a tubular key in to be copied, it will likely be copied on a Ilco 1137B, a brass blank. An original tubular key is almost always on a steel blank.

Tubular keys are stressed a lot in use, so a brass one would not be very durable.

I did a job yesterday for a client who contacted an online company requesting a key to code (not tubular).

He was quoted $17 each plus shipping. He wanted 2 keys and would have had to wait 4 days.

I did the whole job in 30 minutes including picking, pulling the plug and impressioning the first key and duplicating the second for $55.

It was for one of those Thule bike racks. It would have taken so much longer to search for the code.

I see the benefit in online code cutting.....but there is no way they can guarantee success.

Most reputable locksmiths will guarantee their work.

When it comes to tubular, I think you'd be better off ordering a set of space and depth keys and just using your Scotsman to make keys to code.
