Homebrew Hall of Fame!

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Those are indeed some very nice looking picks. Thanks for sharing with us the article and photo's of your work.

For the person who mentioned in another thread about my Flame set being anodized, well stick around....this will likely happen in the near future when I start making again.

Good job with an excellent finish.

I finished these last week. They have gone to the same home as the other two green ones I posted the pic of.

Ratyoke, you are either disgustingly meticulous or have access to some very advanced machining tools. That is one of the most beautiful picks I have ever seen. I can see the detail on all the edges - you beveled them. The metal itself looks bead-blasted. Very very impressive.

I am a jeweler and I used to have a job manufacturing jewelry for fairly high end stores. I have some nice tools, but i am not using any CNC mills or any machine tools to make these. Its all laying it out by hand, and grinding on the belt grinder or with a rotary tool. I finish with hand sanding. They aren't bead blasted, the finish is done with scotch brite pads. Any unevenness in the bead blasting shows up as dark spots after its anodized. My bead blaster is too small to give a nice even finish.

You were a jeweler, interesting, I was into silversmithing fabrication (thats soldering and sawing to those unfamiliar) and also became a waxsmith for a while but had the castings done by a local company. I did this for about 20 years off and on. haven't made any jewelry now since 1990.

Were you doing it as a hobby or for a job?

hobby

Postby raimundo » 18 Sep 2008 7:24

It started as a hobby but I was making money at it. I got quite good and have done some excellent waxes and made rubber molds with the master castings. As to working for a company, the wages are for slaves. And I couldn't stand the customers. All the haggling and wanting to know what the materials cost me. Im no salesman, buying a manmade ruby for 15 bucks and selling it for hundreds after mounting in good art is about not telling the truth to these sh**heads. I just liked creating it. To many of the 'customers' were people I just wanted to chase away.

Yeah. Unfortunately I have started looking for a job as a jeweler again out of necessity. I am trying not to think about all the things I disliked about it.
