Tension tools

Postby Murph » 27 Jul 2004 20:30

How far into the lock should a tension tool be inserted? I have one of those Master Combo locks with the keyhole to bypass the combination.
I appreciate any suggestions/help.

Just experiment. Make sure it doesn't interfere with your picking motion. I normally stick them in at least 1/2 to 3/4 of the way in just so I can put tension on the lock without it slipping out. If you have the room stick it all the way in but make sure it doesn't contact your pick. You can purchase some very small, thin tension wrenches if what you are using it too big, or even grind it down to fit.

lock_assassin, thank you for your input. I made my tension tool from a wiper blade spine and I'm please with its design. I checked out other members' pictures of their tools and made mine from what I have seen. The part that goes into the plug is approx 1". I'm going to reduce it to about 3/4". I'll make another one with a long blade for other locks, moreover, I'll make new ones as I see fit.
Thanks again!

because I prefer to put my wrenches in the top of the keyway, most of mine are between 10mm and 12mm long - doesn't really nead much more
Oh look! it's 2016!

I agree with WhiteHat - something between 10-20mm or roughly .5", just far enough so it "grips" and does not slip out of the lock. I guess it would work the same if it went much deeper into the lock, but would only restrict you with smaller locks with shorter keyways. 8)

Just make sure it goes in far enough to where it wont slip out and be sure it's filed down far enough so it cant interfer with the pick that goes in above it.
