This is the old Locksmith business info area and will be broken down to fill in the new sections below.

All situations call for different reactions... as a bartender I can tell you all about it...

I'm still just a student.. but I don't see what he did as wrong... the fact of the matter is, unfortunately, if the boyfriend wants to get in, he will it's just a matter of determination, and using youtube... theres even high security bypass techniques... Man I hate that... but what he did really is just the same as changing all the pins... he knew the lady could not afford a complete re-key... so he made one pin longer, and cut the existing keys to compensate, if anything to get on him about, is the fact that he could have charged more for his time/work/callout... I'll remember this... GOOD FIX MATE!....makes me want to do this to my rental unit... just for piece of mind...

I just talked to the lady and went and changed the entire cylender with brand new keys every thing is brand new.
It only took me about 2 minuets, she talked my ear off but I got out of there quick.
I didnt feel good about it , so I just did it .
By the way and I didnt want to say this but I only charged her $50 to begine with, and nothing the second time.
She's a real estate agent and wanted to keep her as a client and didnt want any thing to go wrong.
I only asked this question because I didnt feel good about it.
I do feel qualified to do most jobs though.
Thanks to all for the feed back , I guess you live and learn I do feel that the first job I did was "good" enough and I was kind of proud of myself for figuring it out the way I did , but I dont think it was ethicly the way to do it as for why I redid the job.

Nothing wrong with going back and doing what you feel is right to take care of the customer!

That will probably go a long way in getting future business versus the time and materials expended.

WELL DONE! I didn't want to say anything, as I do not believe Lockies have the right to tell others how to conduct their own buisnesses. I just hoped this is something you do, because you are a professional.

I'm sure you are more likely to get further work from her now. Someone coming back to do a job properly is so rare, it is a sign of them caring about the work they do and if it happened to me, I'd put all my work their way in future, as they are not likely to rip me off if they care that much about the job they've done.

ALL the pins should have been replaced - bottoms, drivers and springs. If the lock was fairly new, you could have recombinated it using the existing pins, if it was 52749, make it 74295, etc. The important thing is that you learn something from this experience!
