Please don't try to pick it. You can really mess up a lock sometimes and make it so that the key won't work anymore. Also if it's part of a master key system, it's almost guaranteed you will need to call a locksmith to repair it. He will know what happened.
I don't think you could pick that lock without some real tools.

Interesting key, but as the previous poster said, don't pick locks in use. If you want to see if the side dimple bits matter, check a room mates key or a friend who has a key to the same system. If they have them, its probably important.
That said, it probably is master keyed, meaning that it has two shear lines. I also have a collection of sargent locks, and you really do need picks to pick them. I suggest you make some (use the search button) or buy some (search for more info).

if im seein that right, those are sidebar dimples and you won't be picking that puppy for some time, start simple n work up kwikset is your friend.
we all try our hardest at what we do, it's the great ones that understand its not what you do, it's how you do it and accomplish it and embrace there strength despite anyone's opposition.

listen n00b, we do not pick locks that are mounted on doors and that do not belong to us. It is one of the most important rules we follow as hobby lockpickers that distinguishes us from looking like criminals. If you have that ABUS padlock, then you still have something to practice on. You can also walk to a store near your university and buy more locks. And honestly, are you telling us that you are going to remember to carry your lockpick tools when you go take a shower, when you can't even remember your dorm room keys? cmon.... give us a break. We have users here with the same kind of question every few months; in fact I already started a thread of people who were picking the lock on their house, apartment, dorm room, office door, and ended up breaking or getting the lock in a stuck position. So as we have told people before you, and as I am sure we will tell n00bs after you, resist temptation of picking every lock you walk past, and don't pick the dorm room lock, because it belongs to the school not to you. This hobby might not be for you if you run around like a bored teenager who cannot control which lock he picks. Squelchtone

yes the way you pick locks with sidebars is a simple 3 step process. Step 1: Practice picking pin tumblers for as long as you can mentally handle (about 1 year) Step 2: study locks with sidebars. Step 3: Buy a lock with a sidebar and practice s'more ??????? profit

The key you have in the picture looks to be sargent signature, which is a high security lock. Even if it was yours, picking it would be quite difficult.

Your trying to run before you can walk, if this lock is the only one you have and you have no idea abt it i can suggest a couple of things to do. Put that lock away for a later date, if you have not got a car, then use the legs god gave you, its called walking, go and buy yourself a kwikset lock, these are basic beginners locks and should start you on the way to becoming proficient, there is no quick fix to picking a lock, you will only learn by practicing and gettting an understanding of how locks work. One week on the same lock is not really long enough, what have you learnt in that week? you dont appear to have learnt anything abt it except the fact you still cannot open it or even figure out where to begin with it, forget the side bars, forget trying to open this lock at the moment, I'm not having a go at you m8, i'm just trying to add some further advice to what has already been given. So back to my opening comment, your trying to run before you can walk, read some of the posts on this board, the information is here for beginners, there is no quick fix for what you want to know, practice and patience young grasshopper
