Magnum M5 Masterlock driving me insane!

Postby parsethesalt » 1 Mar 2009 23:17

Hey everyone :D. I've got a small problem with the magnum m5 master lock. I just cant seem to get it open! I don't see many people talking about this lock, I dunno why but either way I cant pick it >.< I believe it has spoole pins and I've picked spoole pins before but with this lock I can only get maybe 2 pins up then the other 3 no matter how light I go on tension I just cant get them pins to set and when I go too light click! You guessed it, they reset and I'm back where i started. Anyone that can help me out with this lock it would be most obliged :( here is a picture of the lock also for anyone thats wondering I use a uniball clip for a tension wrench and a standard southord short hook or half diamond for a pick. Image sorry you've gotta click on the picture to see the image bigger.

Yeah this is what this guy was talking about (Steve24 ) this are the new line of Master lock at Home Depot this
locks are really easy to pick open ,if you are new to picking locks you should start with the lower series of master locks or generic locks. also try kwikset before you jump into schlage. then try picking this lock and you will see how easy is to open this lock, you may be using to much tension or getting to desperate to open this lock. You should not have trouble opening this lock using the short hook or the half diamond just relax and take it easy don't rush, there is a lot of info about picking this locks on the web including videos hope this helps.

I played with this lock during Christmas Holidays... at the beginning it was hard, but now I can open it in less than 5''!!! I know this lock so well that I use it to test my picks while I'm making them.

In my post here you can find how I became confident with it.

Cheers :)

If you have the key look at it, you may be "overpicking" it. Some of these you just have to gently brush the pick over some pins and they'll pop open.
I have one where you put medium tension on then insert the pick at an angle and push all the way back and it will open. Sometimes these locks are so cheaply made that picking them normally will not get them open

Look for a bump stop pin (barrel pin) in the second pin chamber.

Hi Tooly, how did you find that? I haven't noticed anything strange with mine (exactly the same lock front bottom).

Thanks :)

I just got one of this locks master #5 and suprise me,how easy was to pick open and i did what (5thcorps ) said i just gently brush the pick over some pins and they'll pop open i use the same technique with similar locks and it
works sometimes won't work i use the same technique on this #220 master and it work really good, while this two best locks i have one is 6 pins
the other one is 7 pins i can pick them really fast, while sometimes take me long time for this best locks i don't use this technique it won't work.

There isn't anything different, but if you were to look for a security pin in one it would be a bumpstop cylinder, which has a "reverse rake tapered driver pin" in the second position.  It would say bumpstop on the packaging.  Then it would be a 10 of 10.    I remember someone saying awhile back that these weren't bumpstop unless you order them with an n added to the product number, but I forgot.  It just seems like they went through the trouble to drastically change the appearance, but not put 1 security pin in the cylinder and I think it's rediculous, so I keep having memory lapses.

Thanks for the explanation Tooly. I was starting doubting about my sense of touch :)

By the way, yesterday evening I tried chronometer myself... and I couldn't open the lock! It seems that if I'm in a hurry I lost my concentration and I try to force the lock open. If I don't care about opening it quickly, it pops open easily. Funny.
So parsethesalt, you have to stay calm and focus on the pins. Visualization is the magic word.

Good luck :)

yeah before trying to pick well you need to learn the rudiments of assembly and disassembly and how they move inside. All good pickers have a pin set and and at least a small collection of lock tools

Dont this type of master lock have a ball bearing on each side of the hasp that the ball bearing has to move sideways (open from the top) ? I should make a new thread, cause of the large pile of master locks i have only found 3 types of ball bearing cut outs on the hasps (1) one on the short side - easily opened from top; (2) one on each side of the hasp, and (3) one ball bearing on both sides of the long hasp side. I have over 100 masters i have collected over the yrs & this are all of the combinations I have. Rick

So I just found one of these on the side of the road, and I picked it... well the plug turned, but the shackle won't pop. Is there any special trick to popping the shackle? Also when I found it, the shackle was open.

Thanks

No ball bearings in here, not until you get into the bigger sizes in Master I believe, my 1 thru 5's I know don't have them.

Never mind I got it. I was picking it the wrong way, so the plug would turn but the shackle wouldn't open. As soon as I tried picking the other way it popped open. Rookie mistake

I will say. I am new to picking and have open alot of locks. I have noticed after picking the master M5 for some reason a good amount of the time I have to let off a slight bit of tension to let the first pin drop back down and barely repick it before it opens... I'm sure it's something being a noob is why I guess. I've opened it well over 50xs both reg pick no rake or anything special and with snap gun couple times even though having way more trouble with it... just thought maybe if anyone had any trouble as well could be why I know it took me a little while to figure that out.
