The best would be a matter of the users opinion. I will say the most popular industry wide is the HPC Blitz.

Which was developed by LaGard as the model 1200, and then sold to HPC who still call it the 1200.

In S.A Silca is the preferred machine for both duplicating or code cutting.
The backup here was better but one of our other suppliers have introduced "Keyline" machinery. Apparently ex people of Silca and now making their own machinery http://www.keylinemachines.com.au/inner/lynx.html

Ilco was a choice but dead out and so was Jma and Hpc. Somehow our suppliers prefer Italian machines so were 'forced' to use it

I prefer the Framon for code cutting and an Ilco manual for duplicating. Just thinking that maybe your suppliers choice of Silca machines might have something to do with power requirements. US is 120v 60Hz. I think the UK is 240v 50Hz. What is the typical power in SA?

Each machine has its own merits and there probably is not one "Best" [hehehe] machine.

Silca is predominatly European and not a big seller in the US.

We use a combination of machines...

The HPC 1200 is a good out of the box machine for code work since it comes with 150+ cards and micrometer cards. And with add ons can do Medeco. For the price its a good value.

We also use some Frammons for some specialized work.

Ilco cornputerized machine on the counter for production work.

And a bunch of Ilco 025 manuals for regular old duplication.

We also use some Pro Lock blue punch machines which are nice if you deal with one brand of lock on a large basis since they are portable, require no electricity, and orginate a key each time rather than duplicate.

IMHO stay away from the HPC 1200 punch machine if its still even made. It never did well in our applications.

Around here the 1200 is the most widely used for code work, but I like the Framon for car and MC keys as I think its more precise.
As for duplicators I have an Ilco but my friend has a Rytan and I like it much more that the Ilco. We have cut carkeys on the HPC that would'nt work and then cut the same key on the Framon that worked prefectly.I think you have to calibrate the 1200 pretty often if you drive like i do and dont always pay attention to speedbumps and potholes.

We use Silca machines. They are really good. Its easy to duplicate a key as well as cut to code.

Silca is sold in a lot of countries around the world.

No one key machine is the best. I have 11 in the shop and 2 in each vehicle.

A nice inexpensive duplicator is made by Rytan. It is fast, has nice jaws, widely spaced for longer keys big carbide cutter (bigger is better).

We have one Ilco universal code machine that is permanently set to do nothing but Best keys. We have one HPC 1200 for nothing but Medeco, we have a Medeco Biaxial machine, another HPC 1200 for other code cutting, we have an old Ilco slotted machine for safe deposit and bit keys, we have a Fort machine for doing tubular keys, a Sagar machine for doing 10s of duplicates of common keys fast, a couple of Ilco manual machines with different cutters, and a strange machine that lets you insert a lock core with the bottom pins into it and it will cut a key by tracing the pins.

HPC speedex is a great duplicator for a van.

The ITL-950MC is my favorite code cutter.
