I personally don't think anyone gave him any useful information, anyway...
The guy carrying the torch would probably be the guilty party!? Even a police officer could spot that a mile away! If the safe is not his own, good luck getting a torch in there!? None of the info given actually tells him how to get away with anything, but does tell him how to get caught.
The number of posts really doesn't prove anything, but maybe you're right that we shouldn't be talking about this.. That's why I made the Torch picking comment. The reasons that a torch may or may not work on a safe is probably all in the manual that came with the safe itself anyway. I was basically saying that it probably won't work. Nothing wrong with knowing why not, is there?

Its more than just "tell me how to commit a crime". It is the image we put forth. This is a well known forum, and by feeding questions like this, or can you manipulate a safe with a stethoscope?, ...... it just looks bad. Its just something that doesnt really deserve a reply.

I hate to think that your average citizen is gonna by a thermic lance, I will concede that maybe we shouldn't be discussing this at all in the forum. Yet it does seem that all we are doing thus far is stating different ways to cut through a safe that are cumbersome, costly, and time consuming. To me it just does not seem that this is on par with discussing automotive entry. This is more reminiscent of a thread a couple weeks ago where a guy asked how to get past a discus lock on this dads storage locker. Tons of people suggested various ways from using sledgehammers, bolt cutters, angle grinders, picking , and calling a locksmith to remove the lock. ( http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?t=3834) All that was done in either case was to recommend tools and methodologies. At no point did anyone say to visit http://www.security.org/search/MBAr2.CFM?SECURITY1__RECORD_NUMBER=785 for complete drill templates for safes or anything of the nature.
While I do respect your opinion that this shouldn't be discussed I think the reason shouldn't have been we were talking about safe bashing tools but that we were talking about safes in a lock forum.
Just my 2 cents

could someone with expirience in opening safes explain to me the most effective way to open a safe if the torch wont' work?
I really just want you to think about this. What is this guys interest? Talking about different torches etc wont get him into the safe hes trying to break into. But its feeding a question that should get no serious answers. When we get new people reading the forums etc, do you want alot of posts like this cluttering things up? A how do I break into this or that question, with pages of replys about how he "might" be able to do it. Just think about it, thats all Im saying.

I can agree with that we dont want "how to....into this..." threads on the board.

I am having a hard time seeing the difference here. Looks like a double standard is brewing. Simply because the container is a safe.
If he asked... how do I pick a lock, loid a door, bypass a sidebar lock or similar... how many of the pickers would have jumped in and helped him?
Nobody gave any procedural secrets away and everything said is public knowledge and is probably posted elsewhere on this site... and nobody offered to send him a drilling template!
Just like picking locks... MANY times, people who reply do not qualify and verify the intention of the asker. The question may be suspicious... on second look... likely it is... but doesn't state illegal intent and is worthy of a howstuffworks answer.
And a howstuffworks answer is basically what he got.
But I am just a guest here and if I stepped over the line... please advise me and I'll abide!!
Me... I'm okay with the content of this thread!

I don't miund ansewring questions of this nature in a vague way
I am also fairly certain only a small handful of people that post here have actually opened a safe by means other than the combo
I found this thread refreshing
someething diffrent and worth a disscussion

If this guy got the safe open, he did it on his own. He said it was his, right? If we discuss how to get into a safe that he owns, that isn't so bad. We take people for their word when they say a lock is their's, but do we really ever know? If we treated locks like we are now treating safes, the forum would have to close because we can never get enough proof of ownership over the net.. Anyone can just take a picture of a lock with a key next to it, or a video of them opeing a lock with a key. It wouldn't prove ownership.. Even a reciept wouldn't prove anything. Just buy a lock that looks like the one you want to pick and you have a reciept for any lock that looks just like it as far as most people are concerned. It's hard enough to prove ownership in person even with serial numbers and the like.. I have discussed far worse topics with local police officers who gave me more information about safes than this thread has.. Not much more, but more than saying "It's pretty hard to cut with a torch".
Maybe when this guy is done torching his safe open, he can start picking locks like the rest of us, though. I guess this really IS a lockpicking forum.
I think that if this were moved to general chat that it should be ok though? Isn't that what general chat is for, all the non lock-related stuff!?

it does kind of seem like he is drilling the same question
-here are my blunt words for it
"How the hell do i open this thing"
but we will probobly never know if it is his or not...but arent there real proffesionals that you can pay do get this stuff fixed for you? because if you have something in a safe,it must be pretty fancy ancy, and you shouldnt mind paying someone to get your problem fixed
seems you not asking for a SOLUTION on how to get your safe open
but more or less asking, how to break open a safe

If someone could send me a message of good ways to learn how to feel out the pins.It would be great.
Bored of raking the backdoor.I understand tension now, just wanna step it up a bit.

How do we know it wasn't a key lock safe?
It has been stated several times that this is a lock picking site. But, there is a 'safe/combo' section under the prestigious 'invited' member area. The site historically does seem to cater to combo lock questions.
RECOMMENDATION:
In my humble opinion... I'd recommend an open 'Combo/Safe lock' forum that would seperate these questions from the picking areas.
Further, put the common combo FAQs in that area as stickys and post a sticky rule that says we will not help you beyond what you find in the FAQ and all questions posted should be composed to clarify the content of the FAQs only.
Anyone?

My quick thoughts
I don't like message boards with post counts. I don't think anyone should be paying attention to those. This is my 3rd or 4th post. Doesn't mean my questions or comments are any less valid.
The original poster may have asked how do you cut open a safe, but all the answers easily fit the question "how do you cut 6 inches of steel." It may have been off topic, but I don't believe it was immoral.
I for one don't care why he wants in. He may not even have a safe or know where to find one, we don't know. But it's still interesting to ponder how would you break into one. I know I was interested. And I can't support the argument that if he really wanted in ledgitimately, he should hire someone else. This does nothing except promote the idea that locksmiths are superpeople, and deserve to know stuff that we don't.
There's my 37 cents.
(oh and I agree with the post about the double standard)

Post count is a valid way to determine if someone is trustworthy or not IMO. If you have a post count of say... < 50, how can the rest of the board possibly know your intentions of lockpicking/bypassing/opening etc. The more posts you have, the more the rest of the members of the board are likely to trust you.
