Mul-T-Lock Help Needed

Postby rrkss » 14 Jul 2009 16:38

My local locksmith gave me this used Multilock mortise cylinder with no keys for a very good price. I am having a hell of a time trying to pick it. The pins sit all the way on the bottom of the plug making it almost impossible to put a pick under them. I think I am setting some outer pins because I get some degree of plug rotation like what would happen when you false set on a spool, but have not been able to pick it open. Anyone know how to pick this thing with conventional picks?

One picking attempt, I got a degree of plug rotation that would not reset even after removing my tension wrench. The pins felt lose and rattle like a set pin would. I had to physically turn the cylinder back to reset the pins.

Mul T Lock use telescoping pin tumblers; pins within pins. To pick a MTL you need to pick the outer pins *then* the inner pins. When you pick the outer pins the plug will rotate a few degrees (it looks and feels different than a false set) and you can focus on inner pins. Inner pins are actually very easy to pick on their own, just raise each one and it will break at the shear line (it sound stupid but it is literally that easy due to the angle at which top pins are held).

Thanks for the help datagram. I found out that the degree of plug rotation was because I had set the outer pins however one of the pins hung on what I think is a serration (Does multilock use serrated key pins?) and it would not open. I had to slightly rotate the cylinder back and the pin fell then I applied tension and got a massive plug rotation. Then picked the inner pins easily and the lock opened though I did run into the 180 degree problem which was not too hard to fix.

Congrats!BTW,I don't mean to rain on your parade, but isn't it against the rules to talk about picking high-security locks in the public forums?

If I violated any of the rules with this post, I apologize. Just ran into a little problem with a lock I had received, and wanted to consult with people who might have the knowlege to solve the problem. Don't have access to the advanced section yet so naturally, this was the only other area I could post my question.

I don't think Mul-T-Lock Interactive (what he has pictured) is considered high security, and even if it was I don't believe it is considered advanced or restricted material.

Well after picking it, I was able to go to my locksmith, with the lock in pieces  and told them a story about how I lost the keys and keycard and need the lock rekeyed. Now I have a key for this lock :D
