This is mine which I took a while ago... It doesn't have the "BS" mark on it but I dare say it's the same thing.

Hey olson, I saw your thread about that one yesterday. Nice breakdown, and yeah, they're exactly the same internals going by the one craneman bought (which is kitemarked like mine). I don't know what the kitemark on the X5 is all about, but I'd love to know what the difference beween yours and mine actully is. They both seem to have the same drill protection and serrated drivers by the looks of it, so what's going on? The only difference I can see is that my key has a hi-lo style bitting.

Have you still got the packaging yours came in? The product code on mine is P-X52KP-PB... it's on page 7 of this PDF. Among the information it says "Key security grade 6". Judging by the bitting on your key, maybe it's a lower security grade. That's all I can really think of.

Heyup,

When I bought mine it didn't come with any packaging, I just got it with a couple of keys and bits in one of those see-through sealy bag things from a local lockie. It cost £20.

There was a label on the back I forget the number but it did have an "X" in it if that helps.

The bitting isn't particularly tricky on mine, there is a short pin towards the back but it doesn't pose any significant issues when picking. In fact, having bought the lock and planning on having a good afternoon of fun picking it I was a little disappointed when I managed to open it inside of a minute and went so far as to take it back to the lockie, not to complain but to say is this really the best they do..apparently so. The next one up which he told me I wouldn't be able to pick was a MulT interactive.. £30.. picked that.

I'm guessing here but it would seem to me that obtaining the "BS" kite mark might seem to indicate a more tricky bitting, either that or the one I bought was just manufactured before they got the certification. Like I say, just a guess.

Happy days!

Yeah, there's a sticker on the back of mine aswell but it says QC04. The actual model number is on the packaging, not sure what the code on the sticker means. Strange that yours came in a ziplock bag, I take it you got it second hand along with the other stuff? This one was £12.98 brand new, so I'd like to think so. :)

You're probably right about the bitting being a factor in the whole kitemark fiasco, great minds think alike after all. I actually thought the same thing about them being out a while before being certified aswell, so that could be a possibility too. Apparently keys are graded in security from 1-6, how they grade that is a mystery to me though. Guess it's a combination of profile and bitting, but there must be more to it than that if there are 6 grades... wonder if I can find some info on that. Only one way to find out!

The bitting has nothing to do with the BS marking. The BS rating is afforded by having the anti pick pins and the anti drill pins, individual bittings are just luck of the draw.

The reason your lock is kitemarked is that it's a recent production, Olson's is probably a bit older. Seems customers are a bit more savvy about the BS kitemark recently, so manufacturors are making them as prominent as possible. Of course, without the accompanying detail of which BS rating has been achieved it's pretty meaningless to most folks.

Usually those stickers mean "Quality Check" and the number is the personal number of the line/human/group that checked it.

saw one recently on a front door - with a yale 77 on the back. Easy to slip of course, so kinda made the BS rating redundant from a security point of view (in this instance)
