Read the PM, not as small a number as I was expecting, still a def. threat, but as it comes to tolerances, I believe it's absolutely achievable for Kwikset to improve it in another gen. of the product.

Definitely interesting, but doesn't change my perspective on the product, yet.

Kwikset should be careful about tightening the tolerances in this lock. I have seen a problem a couple times where someone tries to set the lock to a key that doesn't use kwikset depths/spacing. Usually it works just fine (because of the loose tolerances), but occasionally the lock doesn't set to the key immediately. When it finally does set to the key it can happen while the key is being pulled out of the lock. And since a lot of people like to test the lock while actually locking the door to test......most of us know better but you get the idea.

This isn't a common problem, but if the tolerances where tightened.

Since you guys where talking about try keys. I myself don't think that try keys is that big of a threat. Especially compared to the other locks in the same price range! Let's put this into a quick perspective. The other locks in the price range use 1 try key (bump key). To do this on a smartkey you need "X" try keys (I don't know how many, nor do I need to know. But it's a lot higher than 1) Also, who wants to carry around try keys? I hate carrying try keys on the truck, they are basically dead weight. I will admit that I have one set of try keys on the truck. But I would be hard pressed to actually put a second set on. And if I wouldn't want to carry the keys, would a thief?

I think I am done ranting, but I do have a small wish list for a higher grade kwikset smartkey. I would like it to use a 6 pin key. have the cylinder/housing/sidebar all made of brass or stronger metal. Tighten the tolerances. Take away the easy to use rekey function, use a different tumbler for each depth. Tumblers should probably be made out of steel. One last thing, hold the cylinder plug in with something more than just a clip.

Those changes would be nice. You wouldn't have to worry about it being set to keys that aren't any good (well, some locksimths,.... I'll play nice). It would also prevent the way I open them, if done correctly. And yes it would also make the number of try keys go way way up.

I gave you 2 different sets. The first consisted of 32/243 keys. Usually you only need the smaller set but the 243 additional keys are there just in case. I think Billy Edwards was purporting 100% compromise on all the locks he tested the 32 key set on - but that's purely anecdotal so take it with a grain of salt.

The 3rd set is basically another approach to the first two, this time utilizing half cuts instead of Kwikset's factory cuts.

Maybe you should go buy one off the shelf and try the screw driver bypass again - it still works.
