Padlock picked... can't get it to lock again

Postby mike_d983 » 13 Sep 2009 23:41

Hello,

I've gotten a ton of information off of these forums that has really helped me out in getting started with picking so I was wondering if someone can help me with this. Sorry if it's been asked before but I'm having trouble putting my question succinctly enough for the search engines.

Alright, so I have this lock that I just managed to pick for the first time today. I didn't get a key with it, honestly I just found it lying on the ground. It's a pretty substantial lock for someone of my limited skill - an Almont Re-keyable padlock. In my excitement after first picking it, I completely forgot what I'd heard online about this lock. Apparently you need to turn the cylinder to unlock it and turn it again (in the other direction?) to re-lock it. I forgot to re-lock it while I was still able to freely turn the plug with my torque wrench.

Now the lock is stuck rotated 90 degrees clockwise. I can achieve some play with the plug, about 10 degrees in either direction. However, it doesn't appear or feel as though there are any pins to pick anymore. I've never picked a lock like this kind before so I'm a bit confused as to why I can't pick it to lock it again... probably because I don't really understand how the mechanism works in a lock like this. I'd really like to get it back to how it was originally since it was a lot of fun to pick the first time and I want to try again.

Any help?

Haha, how embarrassing - I was afraid this was going to happen when I was typing my previous message.

I spent a few more minutes playing with it and figured out the solution, I just had to shove the shackle back down and the plug spun easily. Woops, hehe, guess you learn something new every day  . Well thanks anyways for stopping by my thread and I hope to get (and hopefully even give) some advice in the future on lp101. :D

Yes, it is key retaining. It won't turn backward with the shackle open. DO NOT leave the shackle open with the picked plug turned, as turning it 100/110 degrees will allow the plug to be removed from the padlock. This is how it is rekeyable, and you need special tools to reassemble the lock once the plug is removed. Alot of patience too... Impressive pick for a new guy. Those are some nice padlocks.
