MLA vs ICL??? UK Locksmith Courses??

This is the old Locksmith business info area and will be broken down to fill in the new sections below.

the stock you refer to is the old lishi picks , most of which are getting outdated and have been superceded by the new 2 in 1 picks, even the lishi picks have had to be updated.
So as previously stated my understanding is that tradelocks have no influence over the old tools stocked by the chinese suppliers, only over new products , so you will still see the old stuff sold by these as cannot be controlled , but outdated to all that buy them.

you really need to email them about this , as they now own the name and the trademark lishi, so may be able to do something, talk to them.

The reasons are not long winded , but include;

1) depth of skills taught are far greater
2) more advanced courses and subjects covered
3) all skills covered on one course or another
4) the depth of knowledge and time proven skills of the instructors
5) the fully equipped training centers

There are for more courses for members than you see advertised , the training is longer and more thorough , they cover all skills and not just entry , the instructors are some of the proven biggest names in the industry , and at the end of it the exam is actually worth something and means something worldwide.
ICL are working to this , but mla are already there.

no one can learn an entire trade in days , and without the training in the service skills and traditional non opening skills , many will suffer as its the entry market thats been flooded not the specialist skills area of the business.

To keep it simple I think you'll find most training boils down to the reputation of the instructor and the get up and go of the trainee. You can teach a Cart horse to run faster but you'll never beat a Race horse scenario.

In a previous life I had to teach subjects that I had only a few days to brush up on and some of my students thought I had been doing it for years. Locksmith training is the same. The guy standing in front of you can exude confidence and baffle you in the areas he has brushed up on but he may not have a clue about the big bad locksmith world. With the MLA they have put the years in and have a good understanding of what is required outside the training school. Sure some of the subjects they teach you may never need or even use but it gives you a grounding to build from.

Other training schools just go straight in for the kill with the "You can earn £500 - £1000 per week, work your own hours, have to drive up to 15 miles to a job but this will reduce over time cr@@.

You've got to figure out what you want from the training. The MLA are one of the most established and respected associations but like others the old money making poison is creeping in.

As Martin has highlighted pick a course that will show you how to make a living if it is a career move you want. If you are doing it for enjoyment and don't really need the money it would be best to find another career, as sadly some people need to make a living from locksmithing and in todays market there are as many part timers doing the work as full timers that there is not enough money to go around.

As far as approved ICL training is concerned just because it is approved doen't mean it's the best, just it is of a decent standard. With the juggling around of the committee and recent ongoing discussions the ICL will be pulling away from any novice training and concentrating on trading locksmiths. Any training done outside of this by ICL members will be off their own backs and reputation. The ICL will not support it.

There is too much hearsay and competition within the industry that sadly it is hard to know who to listen to and if the recent MLA show is anything to go by even the suppliers are getting in on the act. Putting competitors down rather than use the energy to make themselves better.

Good luck its not like there are shortage of locksmiths judging by the emails ive had asking if i have any jobs or would take someone out for work experience.

The best course anyone could do in this current climate is a marketing course as thats the only course that teaches you how to get the phone to ring.If the phone doesnt ring you dont get experience and your 2 day course skills wither.

I'd suggest the best course to take is a non-locksmithing one! However, I'm just saying that because I'm in the trade, earning £000's a week, and driving just 15 miles for jobs. I honestly didn't drive a 5 hour 140 mile round trip yesterday for £65, nor waste 4 hours sat in my van bored brainless. And my wife isn't complaining that I'm not back until 10pm.
